IFFO conference in Tokyo highlights collaboration and sustainability in aquafeed sector.

The International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation (IFFO) concluded its annual conference in Tokyo on Wednesday after three days of discussions on global market trends, technical developments and sustainability challenges affecting the marine ingredients sector.

Delegates from across the industry examined the impact of geopolitical tensions, climate change and trade dynamics on fisheries and aquafeed supply chains. A central theme of the conference was the need for stronger collaboration between industry and regulators to support effective fisheries management.

IFFO Director General Petter M. Johannessen said the discussion marked a shift toward a more evidence-based understanding of sustainability in feed production. “Responsible sourcing—rather than the simplistic binary of marine versus plant origin—is a key requirement for ingredient selection,” he said. “This marks a significant turning point in how sustainability is defined and measured across the value chain.”

Speakers also underlined the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA) as a comprehensive framework for evaluating environmental impacts in aquafeed production.

IFFO announced that its 2026 annual conference will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 19 to 21 October.
