On October 31 (Thu), a media event was held to announce the opening date of the new Tokorozawa Sakura Town entertainment complex, set to open on July 17th, 2020. Prior to this, the Kadokawa Culture Museum situated on the same complex will pre-open roughly 1 month ahead on June 6th.

The main talk of the event was about the Kadokawa Culture Museum, where key members in the development of the facility were present to provide explainations on what we can expect to see and experience there.

The architectural design is led by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, who is also responsible for the New National Stadium, which is to be used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Inside the museum will feature a giant 8m book shelf, unofficially dubbed the Book Shelf Theatre. The outside design features impressive stone layering, inspired by the coastal cliffs of Scotland.

Tokorozawa Sakura Town will play a central role in the COOL JAPAN FOREST project by offering a creative space for cutting-edge industries and cultural works to be developed before being introduced to the world. A central facility that fuses library, art gallery, and science museum will serve as a showcase for the best of Japanese pop culture.

COOL JAPAN FOREST is a joint-project led by the city of Tokorozawa and Kadokawa Corporation, aiming to boost local industry and raise the city’s profile.
