Kyushu Bike Adventure 14 – Nobeoka to Miyazaki
Too fresh. Too fresh. Too fresh. No. Too fresh. No. No. Too fresh. Too fresh. My noa dreams are haunted by that Azamui lobster from yesterday. He’s just lying there quietly watching me while I consume him. I’m sorry, man. I didn’t know. I didn’t know. Damn. I leave my dreams and my faulty behind in Noio and catch an early bus to Takihjo. It’s a windy ride up mountains, over bridges, stunning vistas. Last night was lowkey. A chili Mossberger, spicy with the usual sides. Tasty, but not exactly vlog worthy. The bus drops me at Takihjo, a mountain town famous for its gorge. I hit a Yamazaki for a quick breakfast. Then I make my way to Takho Gorge. And that’s it. That’s the famous view. Kayaking, it’s a nogo as the water’s too high. Never mind. There’s also a canyon walk, which is nice, but pretty short. It’s all beautiful, but maybe a little overhyped. Back in Noa, I reunite with my foldy. I missed you, little guy. And it’s a 20 km sprint to Hayagashi station. And I’m hungry again. Matsuya’s Guillodon hits the spot. Cheap, beefy, delicious. The limited express train takes me to Satawara Station. Then it’s back on two wheels to Miyazaki. After yesterday’s epic psyche ride, this route’s a bit dull. Flat, busy, no thrills. The highlight, AON Max Value Supermarket. Not glamorous, but still I nerd out on all the fresh produce and prepared meals. Wish they had this in Australia at these prices, too. You know, I could do this trip on a much tighter budget. Bike packing, urban camping, AON max value. Maybe in my 20s. Even you could buy a cheap foldy at Donkeyote for a couple hundred bucks and a bag too to get it on the train. They’re no imitation Brmptons like I’ve hired, but I reckon they’d probably do the job. A few more kilome and I reach Miyazaki. My hotel is right by the nightlife district. Convenient. Night falls and I explore. Soaking in the vibes, I stumble upon Kingu, a yakaniku spot that’s screaming my name. Taco, would you like to eat some Miyazaki beef? Of course you do. Des. All right, welcome to Miyazaki. I finally got here. Another tough day in the saddle. And so, straight to a yakaniku restaurant for some Miyazaki beef. And the waitress assured me that the animal will not be served live on the table. I don’t have a big cow head here that’s looking at me while I’m eating it. So, for that, I am very relieved. What I do have to start is some Abori nigiri A5 Miyazaki Wagu and it’s going to go down in one. Oh, that’s just lean, delicious, just really clean. Miyazaki beef. It’s really good. I’ve had it once before in Tokyo in Shinjuku and that was basically the reason why I came down here. What I got also for entree was like what I thought was a beef titaki but apparently it goes on the flame. So, I guess I’ll let that cook for a bit. It’s got a nice egg yolk over the top of it, and I’ll wait for that. So, this titaki dish is just about ready, I think. Don’t know how well I’m supposed to cook it. I’m thinking not very. It’s called Miyazaki beef UK, and it’s in like a tarde sauce with that raw egg yolk. So, let’s try. It’s that delicious combination of the tarde sauce with the egg yolk that I just absolutely adore. Their eggs are just so fresh. dipping this raw meat, the cooked meat into the egg and the tale sauce is just a little piece of heaven. There’s a sweetness and richness about that Miyazaki beef. Absolutely sublime. That is super super good beef. All right, who let me cook? So, this is green onion salted beef tongue. And the lovely waitress told me exactly what to do. Fold it in half and then cook it both sides. Stripping. It’s losing a lot of that goodness. So, I got to get this down. [Music] It’s that really finely cut green onion in the oil and a bit of salt. Really, really yum. And that beef tongue. Beautiful. Tare egg. Egg and t sauce. Okay. Egg sauce. Yeah. Yeah. Just one. Yeah. So that was an absolutely delicious start there with the tongue. And now I’ve got translated as galby. So beef galby, which I know from Korean food means rib. So I guess it’s beef rib meat. So let’s chuck it on. And that is that. How long did that take? Is anyone timing? So, I did get these three sauces on the side. There’s an onion sauce there and some salt and wasabi. But what I ordered separately was the tarde sauce with the egg yolk. And this is where it’s at for me. Bit of meat is nice and juicy. I can see just bits of fat coming off of it. I’m going to dip it in this tarde sauce. I’m expecting good things. That is so good. That for me was better than the tanyaki beef I had last week. Absolutely delicious. Miyazaki beef. There’s something about it. I always describe it as beef butter. It’s dripping good oil off of that delicious. Delicious oil. [Music] So good. [Music] All right. This comes from the special menu. Super fat, dripping with deliciousness. I’m going to go just a little bit of salt. Nice and neat. Oh, delicious. For the thickness, it just it just dissolves in your mouth. So, I’ve just cooked the next round of this delicious thick cut Miyazaki beef, and I’ve gone a bit rarer this time, I think. [Music] Let’s see. You know, I think if you had no teeth, you could still eat this. I reckon you could break that open without any teeth at all. You can suck it with your gums. Ridiculous. And you’ll see that’s a bit more rare. I think for perfection, medium for this just cuz it renders that fat a little bit. You still got the juiciness of the blood, but you do want to render the fat a bit more than a everyday steak back home. So, so good. And behind us, they’re all having a good time. No wonder. So, at the risk of ruining my bank balance, I’ve got some more Miyazaki beef this time. Skirt. And then I’ve got some harami. The harami was cheap. Let’s start with that. So, fortunately, they’ve got an English menu, and this cut is haram and gawa. And it’s been recommended to have with soy sauce, which I will, and wasabi. All right, let’s try. Slightly more chewy, but still incredible quality. You know, if they just served that up, you’d be happy. You’d be very happy. What an absolute dream this is for me. Finally to this last amazing cut. This is skirt steak Miyazaki A5 all the way. Really thick again. So let’s try to get this medium if I can. If only I bought a chef with me. So this Miyazaki skirt is just looking divine. And it comes with this onion relish on the side. So, I’m going to try that. [Music] Once again, ridiculous. I’m loving just keeping it simple. Just wasabi and salt. And I’m loving the tarde and egg. I mean, basically, it’s hard to go wrong. But yeah, nice and simple. That is so good. And look at that. Finally, we’re at about medium, I think. I’ve got there. I’ve got there, people. So, yeah. All the Miyazaki beef is gone. And they do have a pork dish on the menu. And it’s this. It’s pork cheek. Do you like pork belly? If you like pork belly, you’re going to love pork cheek. This is my favorite cut of pork. I mean, it’s fatty. It’s not healthy. Completely completely delicious. But let’s see if this one is a little bit of salt. That’s all I want. Wow. I’ve been treated to some premium animal fat today, and this is no exception. Pork fat. You can’t beat it. Well, maybe you can. Maybe the Miyazaki beef pizza, but that is still completely delicious. And smartly enough, cuz I guess Miyazaki was the crux of my entire trip here. I’m staying here for two nights. So, there’s going to be more Miyazaki beef on the way. I’ve just got to wait to get hungry again. All right, see you. As I’m queuing to pay, I chat with a local from the big lively table behind me. The one with lots of laughs. And he pays my bill just like that. The priciest meal of this trip covered. How unbelievably generous. This kind of thing never happens. Except in Japan, it’s happened to me three times. That beef was unreal. Maybe I should eat some more in the next episode. Also, I’ll explore Miyazaki and hit Miyazaki’s Jingu Shrine in some wet, wild weather and take my last rest day before the final Kyushu push. With the cash I saved tonight, I splurge on a kiiseki or macasi, nine courses of fresh seasonal chef’s picks, including the affforementioned and ridiculous Miyazaki beef. Surely you’re not going to want to miss that. So until then, [Music]
