Walking Angel Road at Sunrise on the Seto Inland Sea | Shodoshima, Japan
A beautiful sunrise walk across Angel Road, a sandbar in the coastal town of Tonosho on Shodoshima, a small Japanese island in the Seto Inland Sea. The sand of Angel Road disappears beneath the waves at high tide, but this morning the tide was heading out, allowing me to walk across the two sandbar beaches and along the rocky coast as the day began. It was nice to enjoy the spectacular colors in the sky, along with the unique rock formations and the sound of gentle waves on the beach before things got too crowded. Shodoshima is not a major tourist spot, however Angel Road does draw its fair share of visitors at low tide, and as I walked back to the mainland there were a number of people out and about. I hope you enjoy the peaceful morning before all that.

The sandbar known as Angel Road is only walkable at low tide and on this morning the timing was just about perfect to walk it at dawn. The tide was still going out when I started, so there are a couple stretches that would have been easier to pass a few minutes later, but overall the timing worked out well. Angel Road is on Shodoshima, a small island in the Seto Inland Sea and part of Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. The island is known for its historic soy sauce production, olive groves, and stone quarries used in the construction of Osaka Castle and others in the region. I had the chance to spend a few days there visiting friends, and was able to squeeze in one more dawn walk in a different location with a different atmosphere.
