US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed hope for a stronger alliance with Japan, where Takaichi Sanae has taken office as prime minister.
Rubio issued a statement on Wednesday congratulating Takaichi and saying, “We look forward to working with her government to further strengthen the US-Japan alliance and realize our shared goals.”
The top US diplomat went on to say, “Together, we will deepen cooperation, build economic prosperity, and strengthen regional security.”
He expressed appreciation to former Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru “for his commitment to pursuing a new golden age for US-Japan relations and upholding a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
US President Donald Trump plans to visit Japan next week to meet with Takaichi.
Rubio’s statement underscores the US administration’s intention to maintain close ties with the Takaichi government and deepen the alliance.
