JAKARTA – Japan’s Tokyo Games gold medalist Daiki Hashimoto topped qualifying for the men’s all-around competition Monday at the world gymnastics championships in Jakarta, with Paris Olympic winner Shinnosuke Oka advancing to the final in 12th place.
Hashimoto, who competed Sunday on the first of two days of qualifying, remained at the head of the field for Wednesday’s 24-man final with a score of 83.065 for the six apparatuses. Compatriot Oka scored 78.731 after battling injury and illness leading into the competition.
Switzerland’s Noe Seifert posted 82.499 for second, while China’s Paris Games silver medalist Zhang Boheng came out of Monday’s qualifying in third place with 82.331.
Hashimoto won all-around gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and at worlds in 2022 and 2023 before an uncharacteristic stumble knocked him out of the running at the Paris Games, where Oka emerged as the surprise champion ahead of Zhang.
Japan’s Aiko Sugihara currently leads qualifying for Thursday’s women’s all-around final with 54.099 points for the four apparatuses, ahead of Algeria’s Olympic champion Kaylia Nemour on 53.865.
In individual apparatus qualifying, Japan’s Tomoharu Tsunogai advanced to the horizontal bar final in first place, with Hashimoto going through in third.
