Sleeping on Tatami & Bathing Naked in Japan – Japan Road trip 25 π
Good morning. Big day today. We stayed in another love hotel. This place was great. I didn’t film inside it, but every time I mean, they don’t feel like love hotels. It’s like a really nice hotel, but when you come outside, you got rooms with cosplay, girl parties, but our room was just beautiful. Um, it’s in the middle of nowhere again. I mean if you called the hotel alpha luxury suite s sw s we e t and yeah it’s just on a on a main road. It’s great for us. We recharge God I haven’t seen that for a long time. A chain used to see these a lot in Sri Lanka like a chain downpipe. It’s a great idea, right? Rather than using a a plastic pipe. Anyway, really big special day today. We are going to be going to a Rioan. I hope I pronounced that right. A really special Japanese hotel. And we’re going to take you along. So, we’ll do a little drive along. We’re in Kyoto, so it’s going to be pretty interesting. Let’s drive along. Maybe we’ll play a bit of ice spy. Have a little chat with Michelle. Ah, it’s sunny. See you on the road. I just say, Michelle, Rioen or Rioen, how do you how would you pronounce it? I don’t know. A ricotta. A retreat. A what? A retreat. A retreat. Not a suite. No, not a suite. If you uh watched the last video, you know, we’ve just rocked up to this uh Rioan. Uh there’s a tanuka, big stone tanuka. I think I’ve got the name right. Let’s go and check out. Firstly, Michelle and I are not sure we’ve even got the right place, but uh look tanica everywhere. Okay, wrong place. Okay. So, we’re coming to have a little look at the uh hot springs, the onen. Now, this one’s beautiful. Michelle, is this so warm hot water? Now, of course, normally no photos or videos allowed. We’re here a little before and uh Jerry, one of the managers here, said we could come in and make a video, so we’re lucky. Look at this. How beautiful. Okay. Beautiful. Thank you, M. Okay. Sheets. Okay. So, mattress futon sheets. Okay. Pillow. Okay. Pillow. They said we might as well use the onen before the people before the rest of the guests turn up. Okay. There’s no bathroom in the room. It’s it’s a tatami room. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Tatami room. Got this nice little sitting area here. But I don’t know what we’re going to do for 3 days. Michelle, chillax. Chillax. Relax. So, we’ll probably make up our make up our beds. Go and have a little onen. Maybe I can take the GoPro up there. We haven’t got a clue what we’re doing. Let’s go. Practice run. Practice run. So, bye-bye, ladies. Come on. Let’s go. Go in the men’s. Watch out to be trip over. I think the thing to do is to get undressed here. Go in here and have a little wash. Okay. This is a ning water. So, I’ll sit here for a few moments. This water’s bath warm. It’s very comfortable. It’s not so hot. This one’s a little warmer. Find my Goldilocks on 10en. Now, this one’s very nice. Let’s try that one. That outdoor one up there. And in Japan, people are very comfortable with wearing no clothes. Now, this is my Goldilocks. This is this is the hot the hottest of onsens. Now, I’m not sure I’d be too happy sharing with two or three other BS, but uh that’s nice. You can kind of see why people like this sort of outdoor naked. Is it liberating? Maybe there’s no one else here. So, you know, there’s no sort of getting comfortable being naked around other other people. And some of the onens in Japan are mixed onens also. So, both male and female. That’s how comfortable the Japanese culture is with with the human body, which which is kind of cool. My battery’s about to uh run out. Not that I sure you wouldn’t like to see hours of me naked prancing around in an onsent. I think what we’ll do is we’ll cut to dinner. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Music] Beautiful. [Music] That’s so gorgeous. Look. So, some mackerel with miso. Gorgeous. Is that little fresh tofu there? Look. With some bonito flakes. These here are a little seasoned dry fish. Tiny small fish. And we’ve got a gorgeous fresh miso little soup. And then this is a radish, like a pickled radish with looks like the 5-year-old age miso on top. And what are these called? These beans? I can’t remember. Now I don’t remember the name of these beans, but I haven’t had them yet. I don’t think unless that’s what we had yesterday. They were delicious yesterday. They were delicious yesterday. This is the stinky sort of sticky bean, slimy beans. Now I need to uh check the name. [Music] And of course, what menu would be complete without green tea? Japanese green tea. It’s a dagamas. Where to start first? I think I want to try this um miso. Most delicious. Let’s try this. Uh it’s not a silk and tofu. It’s much firmer. Wow. That’s fresh and delicious. That is It’s light. Almost like a creme fresh. Okay. Slightly smoky. Oh, that’s possibly the fish. Now, these are those those beans, and I’m trying to remember the name. It’s a very common name here in Japan, but a lot of people don’t like them because they have a sort of strangely, I’m going to say snotty sort of appearance. They got this mucus on them. This is my first time. Nothing offensive about it at all, is there? No. Shell’s eating at the same time as me. So, um, quite nice. Trying to describe it. It’s very mild. Yeah. It’s got a miso on it. So, you got that flavor. You got all of the strands just about to fall on your t-shirt. One more. Like a spider’s web. It’s like um another one near your chin. That’s it. You got it. Really? It’s like a candy floss. Yeah. Look at the strands. I don’t know if the camera will pick that up. It’s almost like um ethereal misty strands. So, the bean name Michelle’s just looked up is natto. They’re soy bean. It’s a soybean with a weird sort of glutenous paste. Now, there’s also a little tofu in this miso. Yes. So, it’s like a sliced aged dried tofu. Thank you. Thank you. And chef has also bought us a couple of eggs. Apparently, eggs are part of the morning ritual here. Now, I asked for sunny side up. You could have them raw. Quite often Japanese will have these raw and just put them on their um on their rice. Could have gone for that. Michelle, I think the quality of the eggs here are superb. I think they’re from the local farms. She seasoned that perfectly. Absolutely. Well done, chef. Very nice egg, Michelle. Michelle and I used to keep a lot of chickens in the day and we had so many fresh eggs. You can tell when they’re good local fresh eggs. I’m gonna You say the mackerel Michelle’s tried the mackerel. You say it’s very good. Yeah. M. Oh, wow. Good, huh? Look at the color. The dark color of that flesh soaked up this delicious miso. That’s the star of the the star of the breakfast. I’m going to save a little bit of that to make sure that’s the last flavor in my my mouth. So, the nori also little nori seaweed is delicious. Oshi, that’s really nice. Again, the quality of the food here is amazing. All we need is a place to be and a few good friends for some company. If you’d like to stay, you don’t have to leave. We’ll leave the lights on and the door unlocked. If you drop on by, you don’t have to knock. We’re happy to share whatever we’ve got. [Music] Good morning. Good morning. SP are up there. Today we are checking out of our Rayoken. Michelle and I, we’re just having a bit of breakfast before we go. Good morning, Michelle. Morning. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. All we need is a place to be and a few good friends for some company. If you’d like to stay, you don’t have to leave. We’ll leave the lights on and the door unlocked. If you drop on by, you don’t have to knock. We’re happy to share whatever we’ve got. [Music]

It seems you enjoyed Japan's unique ryokan hospitality and hot springs, which I think is a very important experience in learning about Japanese culture. I feel like many foreign tourists just pass through the usual tourist spots and, in a sense, don't come into contact with the superficial aspects of Japanese culture. I think Steve and Michelle are exploring the wonderful cultures of each country from their own unique perspective. Maybe someday I'll join you on your world adventure? Let's experience delicious food and the dignified cultures of each country together, and savor the flavor of life! LOLπ γγ½(^γ^)γ
I wish I was with you both enjoying the traditional food and I agree with Maxrecipe about the hospitality, the hot springs and Japans culture.
This is what I would come to Japan for. You both ate like sumo wrestlers π

Rituals morning food.. …….. π
Great videos showing the real Japan. I will be going to Japan again with my family 22 October for 3 weeks. So not long now! 6th time for me. My wife is Japanese. We are going to Okinawa for first 4 nights. Never been and it's looks amazing.
The beans are Natto – fermented soybeans. I used to buy them sometimes from the local asian shop. What a great place you stayed at.
