Kyoto’s New Tourist Tax: What You ACTUALLY Need to Know πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅

I have seen a lot of fear-mongering online about the accommodation tax changes coming to Kyoto in March 2026. And boy, you can tell that some of you don’t read past the headline. The accommodation tax was introduced in Kyoto in 2018. It is currently sitting at 200 yen for rooms under 20,000 yen or 131 USD a night. In March 2026, there is going to be an increase, but it’s not as shocking as some are screaming about. Firstly, there’s going to be an increase from 200 yen to 400 yen for accommodation between 6,000 yen and under 20,000 yen a night. The next tier is also increasing from 500 yen to a,000 yen. This is a pretty modest increase, and considering the influx of tourists to Kyoto post the border reopening in 2022 and the need for Kyoto to update its infrastructure, the increases are understandable. The biggest change is for the top tier. And honestly, if you’re paying that much for accommodation, the change is not going to hurt you that much either.

Don’t let the headlines about Kyoto’s new tourist tax scare you away from this incredible city! In this video, I break down the actual changes to the accommodation tax coming in March 2026, so you can plan your next Japan trip with confidence.

  1. Yeah people hear thousands of yen and freak out, but in Aus dollars for most people unless you're going super lavish rooms, it's going to be about $5-$10 a night
