Kagoshima Street Food Tour: 10 Must-Try Japanese Snacks

Kagoshima Deong area is a shopping paradise. Of course, it’s street food paradise. Today, I going to be showing you a variety of street food from Demon in Kagoshima. This is a street food series part two. So, the first place is called Haku Mangju. When we ate this one last time, this is so good. Ho means bee. They are using honey. This is the obanyaki. It’s the anko inside of the pancake style cake. It’s a very popular snack here in Japan. They have regular aziki bean paste and white bean paste. And this shop is very popular. Always there is a big line. Oh, it has a very clean flavor, not overly sweet. And yes, there is honey taste. Honey is not so strong. It has a very good balance. This is white bean paste. M. You can enjoy the honey taste more than the regular one because white bean paste doesn’t have strong taste. This is also not overly sweet and it’s very warm. Yeah, this is very good snack. Kagoshimang is a big shopping arcade area. There are so many shops. It’s a very fun place. Today I’m alone. Chin is staying at hotel because he got tired. So I will buy something for him too. Here in Tonga, of course you can enjoy Kagoshima speciality. One of the most popular foods here in Kagoshima is satsuma a. It’s a deep fried fish cake. You can see satsumagi everywhere in this town. Here we came to Ageta. It’s a very close from the entrance of Tonga. So other specialty of Kagoshima is satsumo sweet potato. So this one is two specialities combined in Cuba. M the nice umami of fish and the sweetness of satsumo sweet potato combined really nicely here at Ageta. You can eat freshly deep fried satsuma again. And other specialty of Kagoshima is kroa black pork. This one of course it’s a fish cake but look here is a sausage. This one is made with black pork. M m. So good and plumpy bouncy. Kawoshima kroa pork. It has a sweetness and rich umami and juicy. And this is the most popular one at this agatea. This is that with cheese. You can see cheese inside cheese umami and fish umami blended so nicely. So right next of agatea there is a kakashio. It’s a sweet shop operated by Jokia. And at the end of this shop donut plant corner, they freshly bake donuts. Look at this. This is the baked donuts. And it’s freshly baked, so it’s still warm. And it’s really popular. Many people are buying this one. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? M. Very fluffy sponge cake. And sweetness is good. Outside little bit sakuto that’s also good. And the surface I think it’s sweeter than inside. I don’t know why. Really tasty donuts. So the name of teong means astronomical observatory. Back in the day in Edoa there was astronomical observatory here. So this shopping area is called Tongan. In Kagoshima the most famous thing I think it’s Sakurajima volcano. This city is located only 4 kilometer away from the volcano. They live together with the volcano. That’s amazing thing. Everybody loved Sakurajima. I found a very unique thing. It’s Monaka, the Japanese sweets. And at this Sakurajima Kazam Monaka homo, they have this one. The shape is sakurajima volcano. And inside lots of lots of anko as paste. They have three type of monaka. One is pl the white one. And this one is black using the bamboo charcoal and green one is using tea and green tea. So green tea is also Kagoshima’s specialty. M a little bit charcoal bamboo charcoal taste. It’s edible don’t worry and nice sweetness. So inside is moi sticky rice. You can buy a freshly cooked one. The shop staff compose all these ingredients into this shape. And this is the green tea one. Oh, the green tea and asinine paste is a very good friends. When we eat mangju with agine paste, we always drink green tea. So what next caught my attention is curry bread because the shop name was very unique. It’s called Hats. It means great invention that this curry bread name is maji majibi. It means really good beef curry bread. M outside is sakusaku chewy mochi moi curry is very rich. It’s not spicy. Teusha is good. The curry sauce is good. This is great invention. I already said one of the Kagoshima specialities is sweet potato. I bought baked sweet potato using Beniharuka sweet potato. They sell the sweet potato one yen per one gram from Sanangojugo. Sanango is very interesting name. Sanango is a Kagoshima’s direct means stay relax and chill. This size only 170 y. Wow. It’s like a honey very tender or almost melting. It’s freshly greed. So, it’s really hot and the skin is crispy and inside looks. It’s like a candy. Yes. It’s really sweet. Very sweet. I want to cook sweet potato like this. It’s really really tasty. Here is one tip. While you are shopping in this tongan area, you cannot see Mount Sakurajima. But here’s one place you can see. Here’s a centas a new shopping building. And at the 15th floor there is a observabat. From that area you can see the mount sakurajima volcano very very clearly. So if you have time I recommend to visit the floor. So the next thing is donuts again but this time it’s deep fried. My favorite type and very unique flavor. So this shop is named the truffle donuts. Yes, they are using truffle for donuts and this is it. They have eight or nine kind of donuts but only one thing is using truffle. Smells so nice. M and it’s beautiful yellow color. M. This one sweet and savory. They dusted sugar. But not only that, they dusted salt and oil seasoned with truffle. Yes. Truffle oil and truffle salt. Yes. It’s a beautiful truffle aroma. M. And it’s very airy, fluffy, and also little bit squishy. This one is freshly deep fried. And shop staff said the expiration time is only 30 minutes. This is my first time to eat truffle donuts. Pen Mona is not only one shopping street. There are so many streets, side streets. Most of these streets are covered with arcade. That’s very useful because summer season of Kagosam is very hot. The sun is strong, but you can avoid that heat. Of course, you can avoid rain too, but shops are not only under the arcade street. Outside of arcade street, still there are many shops and this shop is one of them. This is Hikoichi Dango. They have a variety of dango. And why we chose dango? Because one of the specialty of Kagoshima is dango called shinko dango. Shinko dango is a soy sauce flavored dango. It’s grated with soy sauce. So this is shinko dango. Wow. Very very soft dango. Of course, it is squishy, bouncy, and nice flavor of soy sauce. The soy sauce here is not super salty. In Tokyo, soy sauce is saltier than this, but this one a little bit. It has sweetness. Maybe using the Kyushu soy sauce. And I bought one more thing. This is called kikan dango in Kagoshima or in Sakurajima. Uh there is a tiny tangerine orange. It’s a specialty of Kagoshima. Look this beautiful yellow and orange color. Oh, I like this color. M the man flavor and the paste. Tangerine orange flavor paste and inside it’s same squishy soft dango. A nice sweetness, a very natural flavor. Oh, very beautiful taste. So, the next street food is crepe from Haban Noi. Look at this beautiful component. This is matcha crepe. I already mentioned Kagoshima is famous for tea, green tea. I bought tea crepe and inside is chocolate whipped cream. The color is green. It must be matcha and strawberry. M cold strawberry smooth matcha cream and chocolate. Very good. From this grape, I can taste the matcha flavor as it is. Partially it’s sakuto. This is my favorite type of gravy. M. Before I go to the last place, I want you to see Mount Sakurajima volcano again before sunset. Unfortunately, top part is covered with cloud. Autumn part is turning red. It’s like a autumn leaves. And if there is no cloud, I heard it become red. So here is a new reason to come to Kaboshima again because I want to see the other color of Sakurajima again. Yes, I definitely come to Kawoshima again. After I checked sunset time of Sakurajima volcano, I came to Umubi Hoi Ho. Why I came at this time? It’s very late comparing an other places because this shop open at 6:00 p.m. I was waiting for this moment. This shop is very famous for nikumaki oniri. Nikkumaki oniri is a rice ball wrapped with meat, pork meat. This is it. This looks like inarizi but it’s not the abl. It’s meat and on top it’s sesame seeds. This pork is seasoned with secret sauce m pork meat is seasoned with soy sauce based t sauce and it’s little gingerly. It’s like eating like the chayyaki ginger pork rice is also seasoned with soy sauce. Same thing or not? I don’t know but it’s nice. Of course, the pork meat is very tender, easy to bite. I can eat this. I think two or three rice balls. By the way, I chose original one. They also have the cheese or kimchi or like so variety of rice balls. I’m so full now. I enjoyed 10 street food here in Tong Kang Kawashima. What was my personal favorite? H. Okay, I can say three. Haku mangju, the first mangju and dango, shinko dango and kandango. And one more thing is truffle donuts. That was amazing. The aroma is amazing. I really want you to try the freshly deep fried one. Yes, that was so good. And also it’s simple one, but baked sweet potato. Dal was really good, too. It’s like a honey. So soft. I love that, too. Kushima has a very nice food, and it’s different from like Tokyo or Osaka. So, I really want you to try many things in here in Kagoshima. So, hope you guys enjoy today’s Kagoshima street food as well as street food series. The first one was in Ginsa. 1. Satoshi is carrying the Tabi Eats flag! Guys, keep up the great videos. You are giving us a wonderful and cozy window to your lovely country.

Shinichi, you need to tell us what were your favorites from the things Satoshi brought you back!

  2. You sold me on the truffle donut, Satoshi! I'm a mushroom lover like you,and the combination off salty, sweet, and truffle flavor sounds both unique and delicious. The komikan dango with its sweet, citrus flavor sounds refreshing and yummy, and it almost matched your tee-shirt. 😄 Thanks for taking us along on your solo street food adventure in Kagoshima, Satoshi. It was fun! 💙
