Summer in Setouchi Islands | Exploring Naoshima & Teshima
In this episode, we will bring you to the Setouchi art islands The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival held every 3 years on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The first island we hooped on is Naoshima One of the more popular island Right after we rented the bike We cycled all the way to Chichu Art Museum Chichu Art Museum was designed by Tadao Ando Including artworks by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria and more This is a must-go for Architect lovers unfortunately, they have a no-photo policy We never regret planning this itinery An observatory deck is right outside the cafe First glimpse of the Seto Inland Sea despite the heat After a short 10 minutes bike ride We arrive at the Lee Ufan Museum This is Lee Ufan’s “Infinity Door” Another no-photo policy This museum was also designed by Ando Tadao They have a no video policy here Exhibited within its grounds are Yayoi Kusama’s Narcissus Garden Remember to rent a bike in Naoshima We can guarantee none of the places are walking distance The Southern end hosted the most popular art piece and also the beach area The Gotanji Swimming Beach has an amazing view A small camping site with a tuck shop We then cycled back up the the mid-land for our final few spots and we saw an ice shop which is much needed We just need some AC and a good bowl of ICE It is a gift from heaven to cool us down This museum showcase a lot modern art piece Do Ho Suh – Walk the house Re-creating architectural structures and objects using fabric Takashi Murakam’s “Rakuchu-Rakugai-zu Byobu: Iwasa Matabei” Cai Guo-Qiang’s installation “Head On,” featuring 99 wolf sculptures The museum is again designed by Tadao Ando We visited the Ando Museum as the final spot It took us a 15 min ride back to the port Enjoying the final bit of Naoshima Hi Kid 🙂 We kept the Red Pumpkin the last spot since this is right next to the port It is 5PM and the last ferry is already full The staff will always wave to say goodbye Quick tip – do arrive at the port a bit earlier We went back to our hotel took a quick shower and enjoy the free bar It is the free compliments from Super Hotel Takamatsu As we head out, we see all the crowds are heading to the harbour We realise there is a firework night Our dinner booking is at 8:30PM we decided to watch it at the bridge A lot of people are heading towards to harbour here we go! we had to leave middle of the firework for dinner The whole dinner set is prepared by just Mr Rita Octopus Summer Vegetables Isaki Grilled Sashimi Managatsuo Spring Roll Shioamadai Soup Corn Clam Chawanmushi Olive Beef Shabu-Shabu Aged fish Nigiri suhi (Hirame, Aoriika, Tuna) Hojicha Cheese Cake We set off early the next morning Heading to Teshima We took the bus to Teshima Art Museum Enjoying the view before our reserved time This is the popular drive way One of a kind experience We stayed there for an hour We walked down to Karato Port area It is very challenging under the extreme heat we should have rented a bike I even forgot to focus my camera After a 15 walk down hill Restaurants are closed Luckily there is a hawker shop for yakitori A quick recharge for us This multi rack is also an art installation We had a basketball challenge DUNKing Time K can also dunk! and some alley oop quickly search for some energy drink after exercising This is really too hot to handle We gave up some of the exhibitions and decided to leave early We had no proper meal for the whole day This yakisoba is a bit more proper Time to head back to Takamatsu Love the waves and thank you so much! Takamatsu is right there The upper deck = to direct sunlight We went back hotel for a quick shower Followed by yesterday’s firework, Today is the Street Parade Let’s have a quick look at the dance parade and well, we somehow went to a Korean BBQ restaurant Nevertheless, they serve high quality meat Just dance when you had good food We will explore the city today Japanese coffee shop for breakfast Morning with toasts and cream A “short” walk to our next spot Took us another 30 minutes Here we are! Ritsurin Garden is ranked a 3 Star Michilin spot A quick break under the shade This is for the fish! We might come back for the boat ride when it is not that hot The small hill can see the best look of Ritsurin Garden Taxi ride for the next spot Way too hot to handle This restaurant is at Kitahama Alley This cold Dan Dan Soba suits best for summer The soba texture is in high quality We also order Okonomiyaki oops The more sauce the merrier Kitahama Alley is a small shopping area while all of the shops dont allow photo They sell all sorts of merch We went back to Takamatsu city centre during late afternoon They serve local Kagawa ingredient Including Kagawa local sake They only serve three dishes here including a fish sashimi, grilled fish and Tempera Fish The owner has a map at the corner and let all the client pin where they came from This is so cute Our last morning in Takamatsu Creer Cafe is a 15 minutes drive from the City Centre We had a quick coffee and started exploring the area They got a pretty backyard Sakura will blossom during spring time while the Koi fish here are very pretty Our final spot is to hunt for this crepe The crepe here looks very tasty Managed by a one man band It taste so good too That’s the end of our Takamatsu trip
Summer in Setouchi Islands | Exploring Teshima & Naoshima
This is the second part of our trip in Shikoku. After exploring the inland area of Shikoku, we took the ferry and head out to the Setouchi Islands to explore further. You can find amazing art pieces and stunning architects at the islands and we do recommend visiting the large ones, ie Naoshima and Teshima. Just a 40 minutes ferry ride and you will find youself into the paradise.
