How magical is fall at the Portland Japanese Garden? So magical that the beloved attraction feels compelled to extend its hours every season just to give people a few extra opportunities to experience it.
The Japanese Garden, which is normally open Wednesday to Monday, is opening its gates for a few select Tuesdays, giving visitors some extra chances to explore the grounds. The attraction will be open Oct. 14, 21 and 28 this year, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be no member hours on those days.
Those who want to time their visit perfectly can keep tabs on the garden’s Fall Colors Tracker, which this week shifted from weekly updates to twice-weekly updates, offering a glimpse inside at the foliage. The most recent photos, taken Monday, show a lot of green still left on the trees.

If past years are any indication, the end of October to beginning of November might be a safer bet for fall color in the Japanese Garden. In 2024, the fall color peaked between Oct. 28 and Nov. 8.
Photographers keen on getting those perfect pictures should take note – and consider purchasing a photographer membership, which gives early, exclusive access to the garden on select days.
Open 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Monday; 611 S.W. Kingston Ave.; tickets $22.50 for adults, $19.50 for seniors, $18.50 for students and $16.50 for kids.
