This spice came on the side of an eel/egg dish at an onsen and I can’t figure out what it is. It was very citrusy, a little spicy, and left a mouth numbing feeling similar to Szechuan pepper. Any ideas?

    Most likely sansho pepper, which is a relative of the Szechuan pepper.

    I was gonna say kief but then I realized /japanesefood 😅
    Then I thought maybe turmeric? But perhaps it’s bouillon
