This spice came on the side of an eel/egg dish at an onsen and I can’t figure out what it is. It was very citrusy, a little spicy, and left a mouth numbing feeling similar to Szechuan pepper. Any ideas? by Working-Phase-4480 foodjapanese food 6 Comments stephenp129 17 hours ago Sansho pepper? itsokjo 17 hours ago I could be wrong, but my guess is sansho pepper. senex_puerilis 17 hours ago Probably sansho dejus 17 hours ago Definitely sansho pepper.
