TOKYO — A 14-year-old girl died after falling from a multitenant building in the Kabukicho entertainment quarter in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward on the evening of Oct. 13, possibly after a drug overdose, the Mainichi Shimbun has learned.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)’s Shinjuku Police Station explained that the junior high school student had reportedly been in the nearby area dubbed “Toyoko,” known as a place for youths to hang out, just before the incident and may have overdosed on drugs. She fell and hit a man in his 20s nearby, causing him to suffer a head injury.
According to the MPD, a passerby called emergency services at around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, reporting that “a person has fallen.” It is believed that the girl jumped off, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital where she was taken. The building is located in an area densely packed with restaurants and love hotels, located 200 meters northeast of the Shinjuku Ward office.
In Kabukicho, the issue of drug overdoses among young people is becoming more prevalent. Such incidents can lead to hallucinations and states of confusion, prompting warnings from police and local authorities.
