Japan is gearing up for another big transformation on Yumeshima Island — the future home of MGM Osaka. After the buzz and success of the 2025 World Expo, the country now wants to turn the island into a lively tech and leisure hub that blends innovation, entertainment, and tourism.
What was once a man-made landfill built nearly 50 years ago for shipping and waste management is getting a new life. The island in Osaka Bay is being reshaped into a global destination, as part of Osaka Prefecture’s long-term plan to attract more business, visitors, and investment to the region.
From Expo Grounds to a New Era
The 2025 World Expo gave the island its first taste of global attention. Even though it faced delays, budget problems, and low expectations early on, the six-month event ended up being a massive success. More than 25 million people visited, exploring futuristic tech displays, AI innovations, and sustainable energy ideas.
Now that the Expo is over, Japan doesn’t want to let that momentum fade. The government and private investors are looking to build new attractions around the MGM Osaka integrated resort — a mix of tech spaces, shopping, dining, and entertainment zones designed to keep the energy on Yumeshima alive for years to come.
MGM Osaka to Lead the Way
The MGM Osaka resort will be the centerpiece of the entire development. The $3.9 billion project — a partnership between MGM Resorts International and Japan’s Orix Corporation — is expected to open in 2030. Once complete, it will include Japan’s first legal casino, luxury hotels, restaurants, retail areas, and large convention and event spaces.
The resort is expected to attract around 20 million visitors a year, putting it in the same league as integrated resorts in places like Macau and Singapore. Local officials hope it will give Osaka’s economy a strong push and turn the city into one of Asia’s leading travel destinations.
Public Opinion Still Split
Not everyone is cheering, though. Opinions on Japan’s first casino resort are still divided. A survey from late 2024 showed that about a third of Japanese citizens oppose the idea, mostly because of worries about gambling addiction. Another third support it, while many remain neutral, waiting to see how it plays out.
Still, plans for the area continue to grow. Developers are already floating ideas for more attractions on Yumeshima — from luxury hotels and a large water park to even a Formula 1 track.
For now, Yumeshima stands at the crossroads of Japan’s future: a place where high-tech innovation, entertainment, and tourism come together. If all goes according to plan, MGM Osaka won’t just be Japan’s first casino resort — it could become the beating heart of a new global destination.
