The first rule of Japan Fight Club… 👊
There’s a little known secret behind the Hotring Resort of Isak Onansen, a town known for its charming atmosphere, beautiful public baths, and the friendliness of its local community. And one night a year, they all beat each other up at the harvest festival. In October, each of the six neighborhoods of Isaka brings a lantern float filled with drummers and agrees to meet the Hatchiman shrine to smash them into each other. Each float is manned by members of the local neighborhood association with two senior members up top for coordination and looking cool. The atmosphere gets pretty heated, so injuries can happen. And every year, at least one actual fight breaks out, and then the announcer has to tell people to stop fighting at the fighting festival. And gentlemen, you can’t fight in here. This is a war room. …is you don’t talk about Japan Fight Club 👊
Usually a sleepy suburb of Fukushima City, there’s a raucous atmosphere in the hot spring resort of Iizaka Onsen on the first weekend of October every year – that’s because the locals are marching down to the shrine carrying lantern floats to go fight each other 😱
Iizaka Onsen is a great option for a stay in Fukushima for its excellent choice of hotels and bathhouses, and it takes less than two hours from Tokyo. The local people are so friendly and welcoming, I like to think they get all their aggression out during one night of the year at the fighting festival.
Admin’s top tip: Get to the shrine an hour or two early if you want to get a good spot, since this is one of Fukushima’s busiest festivals.
