Japan’s Art & Cat Island—Where Cats Become Part of the Art🐈🎨
This is an island where art and cats come together. A wonderful hotel, a beautiful space. Hope you enjoy this heartwarming journey. Good morning! I’m at Takamatsu Port in Kagawa Prefecture! Today, I’m on a journey to explore the Art & Cat Islands of Japan! The ferry fare was 510 yen one way ($3.40/€2.91). I’m heading to an island called Ogijima. It takes about three hours in total from Tokyo. Kagawa has several islands, each scattered with unique artworks. In 2025, the Setouchi Triennale, an art festival held every three years, is being celebrated. I’m excited to see some new artworks too. And now, I’ve arrived at Ogijima! Ogijima is a tiny island with about 140 residents. And yet, around 60 cats live here! The first thing that welcomed me was an art piece at the entrance. It’s called “Ogijima’s Soul” It also serves as the ferry ticket office. (Welcome) At the port, I met a cute calico cat. Nice to meet you. Along the coast, I spotted another piece of art. A strange object that looks like mushrooms with legs. Unique and cute. At the entrance of the island stands a beautiful torii gate. Walking through it feels like stepping into another world. First, I’ll look for art as I head toward a shrine on the hill. Then, I found an unusual room. Something is strange about this room. It’s not a video editing mistake! It’s a trick art room rotated 90 degrees! It feels like gravity doesn’t exist here. Ogijima has many ocean-view spots. Even the chairs where you can sit with cats against the sea backdrop feel like art. Beautiful. Some buildings are covered in wall art too! Since I love colorful art, this was right up my alley. I’ve arrived at the entrance of the shrine. This is Toyotamahime Shrine. Toyotamahime is the goddess of safe childbirth, and many people visit each year to pray. Even within the shrine grounds, there are plenty of cats. I’ll make a wish for safe childbirth too. What did you wish for? I gave a treat to this cool black cat. On this island, you can give snacks to the cats as long as it’s within limits. Then, one cat started guiding me. (“I’ll introduce you to my friend.”) Such a cute friend. These little paws are irresistible🥰 This calico seems a bit shy. (“Check out this view”) Wow, amazing view. This is a famous spot—many people come to the island just for this scenery. Seeing this view, I totally understand why. A torii gate, the sea, and cats. I captured the perfect shot! Ah, it left. This angle looks great too. Maybe because of the heat, the cats are resting in the shade. Cats are sprawled out all over the path. Should I take them all home?😂 Here’s a café! It also has a luxurious ocean view. And it doubles as a meeting place for the cats🐈 Here’s the menu. I decided to try takomeshi! “Takomeshi” is rice cooked with octopus and vegetables!🐙 Delicious! The flavor of octopus goes perfectly with the soy-sauce rice. The carrots and burdock root are tasty too. What an incredibly relaxing place. Watching the sea and the cats melts away my daily stress. Besides the terrace, there was also a Japanese-style tatami room. They say there are 64 cats living on the island. And every single one of them has a name. Cats have their own territories—some at the port, some at the shrine, and some in the alleys. Are you a local here? So cute. The island cats are mainly cared for by the owner, Mr. Matsumoto. 👨🦳Mr. Matsumoto: Feeding the cats costs about 70,000 yen per month
($475/€405). Me: That’s quite expensive😳 👨🦳: Well, there are 64 of them. Mr. Matsumoto told me that the café’s revenue is used to support the cats. He feeds the cats every single day without fail. He shared with me the story of how he came to the island. 👨🦳: Actually, I’m not originally from the island—I moved here from Osaka. 👨🦳: At first, I wasn’t really interested in cats. 👨🦳: But I had always longed for a rural life, and dreamed of moving to the countryside one day. 👨🦳: About 15 years ago, I first encountered this island during the Setouchi Triennale. 👨🦳: I fell in love with the scenery here and thought, “This is the countryside I’ve been searching for.” 👨🦳: Later, at 57, I took early retirement and moved to Ogijima completely. 👨🦳: Since I loved visiting the island every week, I wanted to give something back. 👨🦳: I wondered if I could help revitalize the island and make it more prosperous. 👨🦳: That’s when I started sharing about the island cats. 👨🦳: Before me, a photographer ran this café called “Ogi no Toriko.” 👨🦳: When the photographer closed the café, I took over in the spring of 2020. 👨🦳: I decided to take full responsibility and care for all the cats on the island myself. 👨🦳: The one in the middle is Maron. 👨🦳: And this one is Ogijima’s superstar, Cocoa. 👨🦳: She has fans all over Japan. Me: Why does she have so many fans? 👨🦳: Because Cocoa is the friendliest of all the island cats. 👨🦳: She’s one of our mascot cats, along with Toriko. 👨🦳: Toriko and Cocoa mostly stay here at the café. 👨🦳: Of course, sometimes they wander outside as they please. 👨🦳: Toriko is the oldest resident—he’s been here at the café for eight years. 👨🦳: The photographer gave him the name Toriko, after the café. Cocoa was friendly with me too. I was so happy to meet the island’s superstar. Mr. Matsumoto shares about the cats on Instagram and elsewhere, attracting more visitors to the island. Thanks to that, money flows into the café and supports the cats’ lives. I truly admire Mr. Matsumoto’s dedication and the cats’ charm. This one is Dora. So cute. If you visit the island, be sure to stop by the Sunset and Cat House. There’s also another stylish café run by an island newcomer. At Damonte Shokai, you can enjoy the owner’s specialty sandwiches and sweets. Authentic bread and sweets—they look delicious. And the view here is amazing too! I ordered something called a Victoria cake. It had a citrus fruit called kumquats, grown on the island, and it was delicious. I found an interesting piece of art I’d like to show you. Just a quick trip to the restroom. Even the restroom turned out to be art! You’d totally miss this if you didn’t know😂 On this island, everything starts to feel like art. Even the cats are part of the art. Then the cats suddenly started a shouting match. It seems the cat on the right wants to play. Or maybe he’s in heat? Either way, the cat on the left says no. On the verge of snapping. Finally, he reaches his limit. Oh no. From a shouting match to a fistfight. But this too seems to be part of the cats’ everyday life. Let’s take a walk toward the sea while playing with the cats. (Hi there) With so many cats on the island, you’re sure to find your favorite. This one might be mine. So cute. A clipped ear means the cat has been spayed or neutered. In the past, surgeries weren’t performed, and the number of cats kept increasing. When there are too many, some cats can’t get enough food. As a result, there was a time when cats damaged crops and troubled the islanders. It was only a matter of time before their health began to decline. To solve these problems, all the cats were spayed or neutered in 2016. The 150 cats gradually decreased to the current 64. There are many opinions about the surgeries, but thinking of the cats’ health and living together with people, it was the best choice. I’ve traveled to many cat islands, and whether or not surgery is done varies from place to place. How much humans should intervene with island cats is still a difficult issue. They’re not strays, but community cats that live alongside people. That’s why the islanders’ views on caring for them are respected. Nowadays, the cats are loved by both locals and visitors. It’s thanks to the history of overcoming many hardships. I’ve come to love Ogijima’s cats as well. On this island, you can even find a piano sitting by the roadside🎹 How lovely. Passing through the cemetery, we finally reach the sea. Cats also live near the coast. I met some friendly ones too! Hey, are you about to cry?🥹 Near the sea, there was a cat photo gallery. “Ogijima” “Big Catch” It’s funny to see the cats themselves going fishing. Cat art and photos everywhere. Such wonderful photos! I love this one! Then I found a cat that looked just like the photo. I wasn’t sure if it was the same one. The face markings seemed different. Yeah, probably not the same. But he purred for me anyway. There may be fewer cats by the sea, but many are friendly. These two seem to be good friends. The second ferry has arrived. There are five round trips a day between Takamatsu Port and Ogijima. During the Setouchi Triennale, about 30,000 people visit Ogijima alone. Since I still have time before evening, I’ll take that ferry to Megijima! This cat always greets me at the port. Her name is Mina. She looks friendly, but if you pet her too much, she gets angry😂 A bit sad, so let’s go buy a ticket. Ogijima ↔ Megijima one way: 240 yen. I’ll stay overnight on Ogijima today, so I’ll come back later! This is Megijima! There are no cats on Megijima, but lots of art! This is just wonderful… The keys don’t move, but they still make sounds. If you do it right, it looks like you’re actually playing🤭 On Megijima, most of the artworks are gathered near the port. They even sold light snacks like rice balls🍙 A unique ping-pong table artwork! It moves!! You can actually play ping-pong on it for 100 yen ($0.70/€0.60). I joined some travelers I met by chance and had fun! This is way too fun! That tree in the middle is way too annoying😂 (By the way, it took me about 30 misses to get this long rally going.) Surprisingly, playing on the moving table was easy! It even felt like a little date. Nice sound! Amazing! Our best record was three in a row. Pseudo-girlfriend: I wonder what happens if I put it in the hole? Siren. The ball bounces unpredictably—it’s so much fun. And this is the power of editing. That was so much fun! Meeting new people is one of the joys of traveling solo. I even met a giant girl. A 25-meter pool filled with colorful items. It’s a town made of old books, boxes, and more, collected over months. That MacBook makes a nice accent. It looks randomly placed, but it feels calculated. This artwork is called “Mekon.” A giant palm tree in an abandoned schoolyard brings a sense of life and energy. Next up, Teshima! What I wanted to see was this fish in Uno Port! Up close, you can see guitars and Minions included in the art! What an amazing piece of art. It got eaten by another sea bream. Back on Ogijima! Let’s head to today’s hotel! On the way, I found some chickens. I’m back. This is where I’ll be staying tonight. Hotel “Ogi no Shiori” The logo design is so cute. It’s a private house hotel that just opened in 2025! Since it’s rented as a whole house, I have it all to myself! This is exciting! Wow! Amazing. It’s a 130-year-old traditional house renovated into a hotel. And look at this view. It’s like a painting. I get to enjoy a 180-degree ocean view all to myself. That’s the Meon ferry I was on earlier. Even the ships floating on the sea become part of the scenery. I spotted a cat off guard. I’m watching you🕵️ I like this room—it feels nostalgic. Snacks are provided, nice! There’s Wi-Fi, outlets, everything you need. Of course, air conditioning too! Here’s the bedroom. A collaboration of Japanese and Western styles. With two beds and futons, up to five people can stay! The rate is 20,000 yen for up to 2 people!
(5,000 yen/$35/€30 per extra person) But that’s not all for the rooms. Let me show you the special one. It’s my very own library📕 Books of all kinds collected by the owner fill the shelves. Just looking at the variety of books is fun. Books, mandarins, and parenting. I tend to choose books by their cover design. There was even a book on the Setouchi Triennale! For some reason, cooking books too. A space surrounded by books—how wonderful. Please enjoy your time. This little window catches my eye. I wonder if a cat will show up here. Here it comes. This is not editing magic. So cute🥹 Since he’s here, I gave him some treats. Is it tasty? His name is Chappy. Apparently, he’s often at the Sunset and Cat House too. We grew a little closer. Chappy’s fur is so beautiful. His meow is just too cute. Better close the window so he won’t come in. Bye-bye. But I open it again, pretending to leave. Huh? A friend came too. They look friendlier than the cats who fought earlier🤭 I couldn’t resist and went to see them again. Hello. I missed you, Chappy. He seemed happy too. He even jumped onto my lap! I love you. See you again, Chappy. Let’s get back to the room tour. Here’s the kitchen. You’re free to use the dishes. Since there are no dinner spots on the island, I bought food beforehand at a supermarket near the port. Beer, tea, and condiments were already provided. Having things like BBQ sauce, dressing, and mayonnaise is so helpful. I like this color. They have all the basic cooking utensils. There’s also a microwave and toaster. I could live here. There was even some emergency pasta. Let’s check out the bathroom. I heard the bath hasn’t been renovated! The retro vibe makes it charming. Apparently, baths used to have paintings like this. It feels like Heidi might show up here. The tiles are cute too. The owner did a great job with the renovation. The balance between keeping the old and adding the new is perfect. It’s funny to see a drum washer in a 130-year-old house😂 They even renovated the toilet! Super clean! This corridor reminds me of my old family home. Old Japanese houses often have corridors like this. And that’s the end of the room tour! The owner, Mr. Kudai, shared his thoughts on creating the hotel. Mr. Kudai: I want Ogijima to become more of an island where people can stay and spend time. When guests feel tired, I want this to be a place where just looking at the view brings comfort. That’s all I ask. Like, “Let’s just go to Ogijima, stay one night, and come back relaxed.” But for that, there still aren’t enough places to stay on the island. Especially for families with small children, there are very few options. Here, you can take your time reading a book, and when you get tired, go for a little walk. I’d be happy if this place became like that. You can even see the Seto Ohashi Bridge beautifully. This is the slow life at its best. It’s 5 p.m. The sunset is beautiful. “Sunset Cat House” turned out to be just the place its name promised. This makes me feel glad to be alive. You can’t see this view unless you stay overnight. It’s snack time in the evening. Everyone’s so good at waiting their turn. That was delicious. I’ve been officially recognized as the person who gives out treats. His name is Koala. Such a perfect name🐨 The mascot cat twins. Cocoa & Toriko. They get fed by Mr. Matsumoto in the morning and evening. Maybe they haven’t eaten yet today.
They look hungry. I ended up climbing the stairs again😂 Time flows slowly with the cats. This must be what happiness means. Long time no see, Chappy!! Turns out he absolutely loves cat toys. Punch, punch, punch. Look at this face. He hides first, then pounces on his prey. Seems he still has his wild instincts. The other cats weren’t interested. But soon, adorable little wild beasts came running in one after another. They figured out I was the one controlling the cat toy😂 Thanks! Looks like they still want to play. They keep following me everywhere. Time to head back! Let’s play again sometime. In the end, they even followed me all the way to the house. Bye-bye! 🧟 A zombie cat appeared. See you again🤣 Let’s take a bath before dinner. Feels so good. They even had a hair dryer! It almost feels like my own home here. For dinner, I bought food this morning at a supermarket called Ace One near Takamatsu Port. It’s the only supermarket open early in the morning around Takamatsu Port! Let’s grill some meat extravagantly! I’ll prove you can make a feast even with supermarket ingredients. Perfect! The golden combo of sushi and yakiniku. Gotta eat some veggies too. Tonight’s drink is a fruit sour. Dessert is a petit Mont Blanc! Cheers to another great day. Ahh, delicious! Starting with yakiniku! Cooked to perfection, if I do say so myself. So good! Fancy gourmet dishes? Don’t need them. I’m the type who just enjoys looking at cookbooks. Sushi, with a splash of soy sauce. Of course, it’s delicious. Even supermarket sushi tastes amazing. Tomorrow I’ll join the cat breakfast tour at 6 a.m. I can’t wait. The tour isn’t official, but you might be able to join by messaging the island cats’ Instagram. But remember, we’re only guests here, so let’s make sure not to cause any trouble. Thank you for the meal! I’ll wash the dishes I used. Finding happiness in the little things… hmm, that makes sense. This book was really good. On the night of September 20, there was a festival. The fireworks were so beautiful. It became one of my best memories. Time to get some sleep. “Enjoy the unknown”—what a great phrase. Good night. Good morning! As planned, I’m joining the cat breakfast tour today! It starts here at the Sunset Cats House. Every morning, Mr. Matsumoto feeds all 64 cats on the island. He spends about two hours walking around the island starting at 6 a.m. That’s amazing! Since he also has to prepare for the café, sometimes he hardly gets to eat his own breakfast😂 It seems each cat has their own spot for eating. Good morning. Mr. Matsumoto: There are hardly any cats that don’t trust me now. After all, I’ve been doing this every day for over five years😂 That’s incredible. Ah, here comes Toriko. Good morning. And the tour begins. 👨🦳: He always follows me around a lot, but even if I feed him here, he won’t eat. 👨🦳: That one up ahead is super shy, but he’s finally starting to get used to me. 👨🦳: I named him Cotton. 👨🦳: Because his color looks like cotton flowers. Me: Such beautiful colors. 👨🦳: Cotton has brown mixed into his ears and tail. Manjiro keeps following us😂 It really is a Cat Road🐈 👨🦳: This black cat’s name is Mari. Mari-chan. Let’s go! Looks like this is their breakfast spot. This area has a lot of black cats. You’re right. To me, they all look the same at first glance. But Mr. Matsumoto knows every cat perfectly—impressive! Good morning! Mr. Matsumoto greets the locals as he walks along the Cat Road. Cats appear one after another from all over! Here’s the second breakfast spot! It often shows up on Instagram too. Be sure to check out the island cats’ Instagram from the description🐈 Next stop—the seaside! It’s the two I met yesterday! Good morning. Come on! This is Koro. Me: Did you name her, Mr. Matsumoto? 👨🦳Mr. Matsumoto: Some I’ve named myself, others were named by repeat visitors. 👨🦳: I’m the one who named Koro and Gonta. 👨🦳: These days on Ogijima, “oshi-neko” (favorite cats) fan culture is really popular. 👨🦳: Tourists find their “oshi-neko” and come back just to see them. 👨🦳: As for food, cats like canned food best. 👨🦳: But to balance their nutrition, dry food is necessary. 👨🦳: Still, older cats or ones in poor health can’t eat dry food—it’s too hard for them. 👨🦳: If a cat has sores in its mouth, it just can’t chew dry food. He really considers so many things when caring for them. Adjusting food for each cat’s age and health sounds like a lot of work. 👨🦳: The cat on the left, Gonta, is also super popular here on Ogijima. 👨🦳: He’s another superstar with fans all over Japan. He really is cute. His curled ears are definitely a charm point😍 Even inside the art gallery becomes a feeding spot for the cats. 👨🦳: This is Hanaguro—the biggest cat on the island! 👨🦳: Looks like a cow, right?🐮 He really does🤣 With his markings, he really looks like a cow—so cute. I’ve never seen a cat this big before! Finally, another fishing port! Cats and the sea really do go together. What a wonderful morning. At Ogiko Port, some cats are very cautious. I keep my distance and just observe. 👨🦳: Oh, but these ones are totally fine! Thank you. Getting the right distance with cats can be tricky. (Who are you?) This is Mimi—the most popular cat on Ogijima! She’s a super idol with fans even overseas! She’s incredibly popular! Mimi, Cocoa from our café, and Gonta at the fishing port are the top three stars. I wonder if Mimi isn’t eating? It’s because of her relationships with the other cats. Cats have their own social dynamics too. Mr. Matsumoto never forces himself on the cats. He respects their personalities and keeps the right distance. That’s why the cats feel safe with him. See you later. And that wraps up the cat breakfast tour! Moka. So friendly. That one’s Olive. Before I knew it, I was back on the path to the hotel. Thank you so much! Excuse me. Joining the tour, the first thing that struck me was just how many cats there were. If I had only come sightseeing, I never would have met this many cats. And I was able to learn so much more about the island cats. It was truly a precious experience. Quiz time! Find the hidden cat! The answer was here! Did you spot it? There are snakes on the island too. But even tiny, cute snakes might be poisonous☠️ I’m hungry—time to grab some lunch. I’ll check out a stylish café for lunch. Starting with a lovely courtyard… And a beautiful irori fireplace. The lunch menu changes daily. I went with the taco rice set! Beautiful! Adding a bit of spicy salsa sauce—let’s dig in! So delicious. I don’t usually eat taco rice, but I’d totally order this again! Chips with salsa, minced meat with rice—perfect combo. The taco rice even comes with a Japanese set meal. That’s a rare combination. These are pickled eggplants. Good! And vinegared lotus root. I usually don’t like these, but they tasted great😂 This café, “Yukuru,” also offers lodging. In winter, dinner is fish and meat grilled over the irori fireplace. That sounds amazing! So the price for lunch was 1,760 yen! There are other hotels on Ogijima too. Like mine, they’re renovated traditional houses. The price is over 50,000 yen ($340/€290) per person!💸
If you stay, let me know how it was. Time to leave Ogijima by ferry. Thank you, my amazing room. It was such a wonderful hotel! Goodbye, Ogijima. Next, I’ll show you the art on other islands! First stop: Shodoshima. When the artist visited Shodoshima after an absence of three years, he felt as if the island reached out to embrace him. This work was created with the hope that people from all over the world would find their way to Shodoshima. Viewers experience harmony of body and mind within the work. A radiant sphere and a dragon—the water deity. This would excite men all over the world😂 It’s a sculpture made as a “guardian of travelers, bringing good fortune.” Adorable. The island even has two giant figures. Let’s hope they don’t invade the human world… Shodoshima is huge, so the artworks are massive too! It feels like the beginning of life itself. Finally, the popular Naoshima! About 50 minutes from Takamatsu Port. The island’s symbol: the Red Pumpkin. Its creator is the famous artist Yayoi Kusama. Like Shodoshima, Naoshima is big—you’ll need a bus or rental car. The art I wanted to see is at a beach called Tsutsujiso. Here we are! The yellow pumpkin and red pumpkin look like a couple. I didn’t know Naoshima had cats too! Seeing cats always makes me feel at ease. But compared to Ogijima, they’re much more cautious. So I’ll just watch from a distance. In the center of Naoshima is an artistic hot spring. And you can actually bathe in it! Completed in 2009, “I♥︎湯” (I Love Yu) is art from top to bottom. That felt great! Drinking “LOVENE,” a twist on Ramune soda. The cap was ridiculously hard to open. I even wore an artsy T-shirt today. Popular Japanese actresses Alice and Suzu Hirose are sisters. Finally, I’ll wrap up with a café tour before heading back. The curry was amazing. Naoshima is full of stylish cafés that still keep a Japanese vibe. Some people visit not just for the art, but for the cafés too. It’s also really popular with girls’ trips. The pudding was firm—just how I like it🍮 Pure happiness. How was this trip for you? Most of the art I showed in this video can be seen even outside the Setouchi Triennale period! I hope you enjoy exploring the islands of art and cats🐈🎨 Thanks for watching until the end.

This video is just wonderful. It makes me so happy that places like Ogijima exist. The cat breakfast tour is so sweet, what a wonderful person, feeding the cats twice a day. That's just incredible. ❤
Imagine an island where cats aren’t just pets — they’re living, breathing artworks 😻✨ Would you visit Japan’s hidden Cat Island and let 200 fluffy masterpieces judge your soul? 🐈🎨 Be honest — stay forever or just take photos? 👇
