The Story of Hachiko 🐕 Tokyo’s Beloved Statue
Meet Hachiko 🐾, Japan’s most loyal dog.
In the 1920s, Hachiko, an Akita dog, would come to Shibuya Station every single day to wait for his owner, Professor Ueno, who took the train to work. Even after the professor unexpectedly passed away in 1925, Hachiko continued to wait at the station — every day for nearly 10 years — until his own death.
His incredible loyalty touched the hearts of the Japanese people, and in 1934, this bronze statue was erected in his honor right outside Shibuya Station. Today, it stands as a symbol of faithfulness, love, and devotion. Millions of visitors come here each year to pay respect to Hachiko, the dog who never gave up waiting.
