The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have sent a joint letter to US President Donald Trump. They’ve invited him to visit the two atomic-bombed cities later this month.
Officials in Washington and Tokyo are tentatively planning for Trump to visit Japan ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea starting late October.
Nagasaki Mayor Suzuki Shiro and Hiroshima Mayor Matsui Kazumi sent their letter on Friday.
They say the risk of another nuclear weapon being used has grown in the 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They urge Trump to listen to the voices of the survivors, and take the inhumane consequences of the attacks to heart.
Suzuki and Matsui have also asked Japan’s Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi for help in bringing Trump to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
