WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited Japan from October 3-4, 2025, where he attended the Expo Osaka, Kansai and spoke at the International Forums on the Promotion of Intellectual Property Utilization for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were co-hosted by the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and WIPO.

Marking the 50th anniversary of Japan’s membership in WIPO, Mr. Tang reflected on the long-standing cooperation between Japan and WIPO and acknowledged Japan’s contributions to the international IP system.

Osaka engagements:

Attended the EXPO 2025 JPO-WIPO AWARD Ceremony, presenting awards to companies using IP to address climate change and to empower women and youth. Mr. Tang commended the support provided through the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.
Launched the latest edition of WIPO’s Green Technology Book, Energy Solutions for Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific, which showcases 215 practical technologies and underlines the role of IP and innovation in addressing climate change.
Held bilateral meetings with JPO Commissioner Mr. Yasuyuki Kasai, exchanging views on Japan-WIPO cooperation, including WIPO GREEN, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the use of digital IP tools for future collaboration.
Visited the UN Pavilion and met with Assistant Secretary-General and Commissioner-General of the United Nations at EXPO 2025 Mr. Maher Nasser.
Visited the Jellyfish Pavilion at EXPO 2025 with CEO of steAm, Inc. Ms. Sachiko Nakajima and University of Tokyo’s Professor and Former Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mr. Kan Suzuki.
Met with WIPO GREEN Japan Ambassador Mr. Masafumi Yamamoto, exchanging views on promoting environmental technology transfer and strengthening public-private partnerships.
