KYODO — The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Friday sent a letter addressed to United States President Donald Trump requesting he visit their cities, both of which were devastated by US atomic bombs in 1945, during his trip to Japan scheduled for the end of October.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki said the world is currently at a crossroads amid the heightened risk of nuclear conflict and is about to enter an age when there are no longer any living survivors of the atomic bombs.

The joint letter in English and Japanese was sent to the US Embassy in Japan.

Matsui and Suzuki said they hoped Trump would exhibit leadership in the pursuit of nuclear disarmament at the review conference for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons next year.

Former US President Barack Obama’s visit to Hiroshima in 2016 is the only time an incumbent US leader visited either of the cities.

In 2017, Hiroshima and Nagasaki requested that Trump visit while in Japan on a tour of Asia that also took him to South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Kremlin to support Trump for Nobel Prize

Meanwhile, Russia would back US President Trump’s candidature for the Nobel Peace Prize, state news agency TASS quoted Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as saying on Friday.

The winner of the 2025 prize will be announced at 0900 GMT, but experienced watchers of the award say it is highly unlikely to be Trump.

Russia has said repeatedly that it is grateful for Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in remarks published on Thursday that Kyiv would nominate Trump for the Nobel, which he openly covets, if he managed to bring about a ceasefire.
