Japan’s ruling coalition has collapsed, according to the leader of Komeito, the junior partner to Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party, after the two sides failed to overcome their differences on political funding regulation.

Talks between Takaichi and junior Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito ended without agreement on Friday, in a major setback for the new LDP leader before she has even secured the role of prime minister. The coalition has maintained political stability for LDP administrations for most of the past quarter century.
