A large-scale missile and drone attack carried out by the Russian military has left five people dead and civilian infrastructure damaged in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 53 missiles and about 500 drones mainly towards the western region of Lviv. It said the overnight offensive continued through Sunday morning.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service says five people were killed. The Energy Ministry notes power infrastructure was damaged. That reportedly led to a massive blackout in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video address on Sunday that Russia is openly trying to destroy Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure ahead of winter. He noted that gas, power generation and power transmission facilities are among the targets.
He also said that the drones Russia used in the attack contain parts manufactured by companies in the United States, China, Japan, and other countries. He stressed that the supply chain needs to be cut off.
The European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas posted a message on X. She wrote, “Russia is masking its failed summer offensive with terror attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.”
She urged countries to put more pressure on Russia.
