The Busan–Tsushima ferry route is on track to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels this year, driven by new vessel launches and aggressive fare promotions by ferry operators.
According to data from the Busan Port Authority, passenger numbers on the Busan–Tsushima route reached 329,094 as of August. With the fall travel season in full swing, more than 200,000 additional passengers are expected by the end of the year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, six ferry companies operated eight vessels on the route. However, most suspended operations or went bankrupt when travel came to a halt.
The route resumed in March 2023, recovering to 73% of 2019’s total passenger volume of approximately 530,000. With the relaunch of routes and new promotions, ridership continues to climb, rising from 242,648 in 2022 to 388,229 in 2023.
To meet this renewed demand, Star Line Co. will officially begin operations of its new high-speed passenger ship, NOVA, on October 3.
The ship replaces the previous NINA vessel and represents the next generation of ferry travel.
Built this year by Dutch shipbuilder DAMEN, the NOVA measures 42.4 meters in length, with a gross tonnage of 590 tons, a capacity of 439 passengers, and a top speed of 40 knots.
Daea Express Shipping is offering an autumn special promotion on round-trip Sea Flower tickets between Busan and Tsushima, up to 86% off the regular price, available on a first-come, first-served basis for travel through December 8.
In addition, PanStar Group is expanding its Tsushima tourism business by purchasing and remodeling accommodations near Hitakatsu Port. The group is also considering launching a duty-free shop through its local subsidiary to improve convenience for visiting tourists.
To support the surge in passengers, the Busan Port Authority plans to carry out facility upgrades at the Busan International Passenger Terminal, further enhancing the travel experience for international ferry passengers.
