TOKYO: On October 7, vibrant rallies erupted across Tokyo and various other cities in Japan, commemorating the second anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. These gatherings resonated with passionate voices and colorful banners, uniting in a powerful display of solidarity with the Palestinian people. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as participants marched through the streets, their chants echoing the call for justice and peace.
Hundreds of activists gathered near the Israeli Embassy in Tokyo to denounce what they call Israeli genocide. They tried to breach a police blockade to get closer to the embassy but were pushed back by numerous officers.
The protesters shouted, “Stop the bombing!”, “Stop the massacre of Palestinians!”, and “Stop the colonization of Palestine!” while they were confined to a narrow area on the sidewalk facing the road to the embassy building.
The protesters condemned the Israeli military’s occupation of Gaza, the deaths of over 65,000 Palestinians, and the devastation of the Gaza Strip’s infrastructure.
One demonstrator stated, “What Israel is doing goes beyond war crimes; its military occupation is part of a systematic campaign to exacerbate the famine in Gaza, ensuring that as many Palestinians as possible die from starvation or are forced to leave.”
The organizers pointed out that Japan has not imposed sanctions on Israel and continues to maintain bilateral trade and exchanges. They noted that Japanese corporations involved in the violence are still operating without interruption. In response, the Japanese protesters called for sanctions against Israel and urged Japanese companies to “cut ties with the genocide.”
