A close aide to Nepal’s interim prime minister has stressed that the caretaker government will focus on tackling corruption as demanded by young Nepalese people.

Ajaya Khanal spoke in an interview with NHK on Monday in Kathmandu.

He is the chief advisor to Sushila Karki, who was appointed interim prime minister, following the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli.

Oli stepped down after turmoil in which protesters and security forces clashed and 76 people died.

Wednesday marks one month after the protests, mainly by young people, began on September 8. The demonstrators demanded that the government eradicate corruption and address economic disparities.

Khanal cited a general election slated for next March as a priority of the interim government.

He said the government should try to respond to young people’s wishes as much as possible.

He mentioned that a government anti-corruption body will be reformed, and suspected illegal assets of politicians will be probed in the coming months.

Khanal cautioned, however, that the government does not have enough time to do everything it wants to do.

He said the government will decide what is possible and what is not, adding that the interim prime minister will continue dialogue with young people to lay the groundwork for political reforms.
