The International Atomic Energy Agency says rounds of incoming and outgoing shelling have been heard around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.
The United Nations nuclear watchdog issued a statement on Monday, saying that the shelling was heard between around 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Monday, local time.
The Zaporizhzhia plant has been occupied by Russian forces.
The IAEA says the plant has been without external power since it was cut about two weeks ago. That is the longest such event at the plant since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
The plant now uses emergency diesel generators instead.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed strong concern, saying: “The nuclear safety and security situation is clearly not improving. On the contrary, the risks are growing.”
He said the IAEA is continuing to engage with both Russia and Ukraine with the aim of restoring the off-site power supply to the plant as soon as possible.
