Two rail lines reopened on Monday night after a crash involving two trains in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo. Operator Tokyu Railways says on Tuesday trains will run as scheduled starting with the first trains of the day.

The collision happened on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line on Sunday night. A Shibuya-bound train crashed into an out-of-service train at Kajigaya Station in Kawasaki City, causing it to partially derail.

The accident led to the cancellation of 1,107 trains on both the Den-en-toshi Line and the Oimachi Line through Monday, affecting about 650,000 passengers.

Services on both lines resumed on Monday night. On Tuesday, trains are operating normally all day.

An investigation is underway, with the Japan Transport Safety Board sending investigators to the site on Monday.

Tokyu Railways said the reason the collision occurred may be that the last carriage of the out-of-service train was partially left on the main track, while the rest of the train was parked on an adjacent sub track at the station.

The Den-en-toshi Line has a safety mechanism known as Automatic Train Control to prevent collisions between trains. Investigators are also looking into whether the system worked properly.
