Japanese beer and beverage giant Asahi Group Holdings has yet to resume normal operations one week after it came under a cyberattack that crippled its servers.
The attack on the group caused a major system outage on the morning of September 29. Group companies in Japan became unable to process orders, ship their products or handle inquiries from customers.
The group has confirmed a ransomware attack and is working to restore the system, but says it doesn’t know when normal operations can resume.
Amid this situation, three other major Japanese beer makers — Kirin Holdings, Suntory Holdings and Sapporo Holdings — have been overwhelmed by orders from restaurants and drinking establishments that have apparently been buying from Asahi.
The three companies say they have begun adjusting shipments of some products, such as beer for restaurants.
Asahi says it had halted production and shipments at most of its approximately 30 factories that manufacture beer, beverages, food and other products in Japan, but that it had partially resumed production at 15 of them as of Monday.
The company’s beer subsidiary says that it has been partially shipping six products of its mainstay Super Dry brand. The beer subsidiary said on Monday that it will resume partial shipments of 16 whisky and beer-like beverage products from October 15.
