Indonesia’s disaster management authorities say 49 people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of an Islamic boarding school building in East Java province.

The building suddenly gave way on September 29, trapping many students under the rubble.

The authorities say six more are in intensive care, and the search continues for 14 people who are still unaccounted for.

Rescue crews began using heavy machinery after the critical 72 hours had passed, when it is said that the chances of survival fall sharply. So far, 80 percent of the debris has been cleared.

Authorities say work was underway to extend the building, when it collapsed. They are investigating the cause of the accident. They say it is possible that the structure’s foundation was not strong enough.

Local media are reporting that Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said steps will be taken to prevent a recurrence.

Prasetyo was quoted as saying that the authorities intend to collect data on all Islamic boarding schools to ensure the safety of their buildings.
