The West Java Provincial Administration is assisting Gedong Gincu mango growers in meeting Japan’s strict export standards, aiming to strengthen the global competitiveness of one of the province’s key agricultural commodities.
Gedong Gincu is a premium mango variety from West Java, noted for its reddish-yellow skin, aroma, and sweet-tangy flavor. It is produced in Cirebon, Majalengka, Sumedang, and Indramayu. According to Dadan Hidayat, Head of West Java’s Food Crops and Horticulture Agency, market exploration is ongoing with Japanese buyer groups. “The export potential for Gedong Gincu mangoes from West Java is very promising,” he said during a visit to Cirebon on October 3, 2025.
Although exports of Gedong Gincu mangoes from West Java have occurred in the past, provincial authorities are now applying a more structured approach to ensure compliance with Japanese import requirements. One of the main conditions is achieving zero fruit fly contamination. “There must be no fruit flies at all. That’s why our assistance is focused on this issue, with help from Plant Pest Organism Control Officers (POPT),” Dadan said.
POPT officers are assigned to assist farmers with orchard health, pest and disease management, and pesticide use in line with international safety standards. The provincial administration is promoting eco-friendly pest control practices, with an emphasis on correct pesticide dosage and environmental safety. “The principle is always environmental sustainability,” Dadan noted.
The province also provides training in quality control from cultivation through post-harvest to ensure mangoes are ready for export. “This is the province’s concrete contribution to support the export of Gedong Gincu mangoes while promoting eco-friendly pest control methods,” Dadan added.
Cirebon is one of the largest mango-producing areas in West Java. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the regency produced 447,769.58 quintals of mangoes in 2024.
Cirebon Regent Imron said Gedong Gincu mangoes from the region have already reached Middle Eastern markets. Mango exports to the United Arab Emirates were valued at US$13,567.91 in April 2023. “Mangoes from Cirebon, including Gedong Gincu and other varieties, have long been exported,” he said.
Imron added that the local administration continues to implement programs to increase productivity and help growers access international markets. “We’re committed to supporting farmers and boosting export potential for our mango produce,” he said.
