Looking to get your fix of travel-related competition programming while waiting for Race Across the World to return? Then you might just want to tune into Channel 4 tomorrow (7 October) night.

A new TV show, called Worlds Apart, is set to air, with six pairs of contestants embarking on a treasure hunt across Japan. The twist? Each pair consists of a young Brit who has never travelled alone (including some who have never left the UK) and a pensioner who thought they’d never travel again.

The show ‘challenges teammates to see the world differently, as their surroundings hold all the clues’, and each pair will be faced with location-based questions as they progress through the competition. At every stage, teams are eliminated one by one until only two pairs remain, at which point they will compete for the cash prize of £50,000.

Channel 4’s Genna Gibson said, “I’m so excited about Worlds Apart. I’ve seen in my own family how generations can feel miles apart – but bring them together and you realise they share more than you think. Japan, with its unique blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modern life, is the perfect backdrop for these journeys.

“It’s been a joy to witness first-hand these pairs of strangers from different walks of life share unforgettable travel experiences and emerge with new friendships.”

Contestants include student Emma, who grew up in and out of foster care, student Tende, who was adopted from Uganda at six months old, retired factory worker Rosie, who embraced solo travel after the loss of her fourth husband, and karaoke host Julie, who has raised thousands of pounds for charity, supporting LGBT causes and stroke charities.

Worlds Apart will start on 7 October at 9.15pm on Channel 5.
