I Rode Local Trains From Tokyo To The Edge of Hokkaido! – Day 2
in the previous video. This is a series where I’m heading from Tokyo to Japan’s eastern most train station using local trains only. Since I have to finish this trip in three days, each day there’s a destination I really need to get to. Day one was a very chaotic one as the entire series almost ended before it even began. At 5:30 in the morning, there was a personal injury accident that happened on the Kahin Tohok line and because of that, the train I was supposed to get on got suspended for a while. Luckily, the 553 was the second to the last train I could have taken to reach my destination. And the service ended up resuming just in time around 6:55 a.m., which was about 10 minutes earlier than the latest train I could have taken from here. So, the destination I had to get to for this day was a ferry terminal. Since you can’t cross over Hokkaido using local trains, you have to either take the Shing Consen or a ferry. This time, I decided to go on a ferry. After taking 13 local trains and about 13 and 1/2 hours of train travel, I finally made it to the ferry terminal and boarded the ferry heading to Hokkaido. [Music] All right, good morning everyone. Hope you’re doing well. This is day two of me going from Tokyo to Japan’s eastern most train station using local train. This ferry is heading to Tomakumai Port, which I would say is on the south part of Hokkaido. From the port, I’ll be taking a bus that’ll take me to Tomakumai station. And from there, I’ll be taking three trains that’ll take me closer to Japan’s eastern most train station, also known as Nimo station. Because of the fact that train in Hokkaido doesn’t run that frequent, I won’t be able to get to Nimo station today. So, I’m going to be staying over somewhere in between. So, you might be thinking, “Oh, it’s only three train rides. It’s not that bad compared to the 13 trains I took yesterday.” But these train rides are going to be much longer. In fact, each ride will get longer and longer, and the last round it’ll take is over hours long. [Music] The temperature is almost half of Tokyo. I only if you can see, but I only have this short pants for this trip, but I did break one long sleeve shirt. Hopefully, that’ll be enough. So, I got to take this one at 6:30 that gets to Tomokai station at 6:46. Oh, I didn’t know this is like a attraction. Well, the thing is you don’t even have to go to a bear park to see bears around here. The bears in Hokkaido are different from the ones in mainland Japan. I heard they’re bigger, stronger, and more aggressive. So, I really have to be careful. Oh, it’s not that cold. It does feel a little bit cold because it was like 34 36° in. But this is like the right temperatures. It’s not too hot. It’s not too cold. [Music] [Music] The payment method for this bus was kind of strange. They only take either uh cash or pay. I’m surprised they take pay but not su. All right, we are here at Kumakuma. No, no, Tomak Tomakumai station. Here’s part of the station building. And here’s the other side. The first train we’re going to be taking is this one at 7:00 a.m. heading towards Saporo and this is the train I’ll be taking. There’s still plenty of seats because it’s Yeah. 650. Announcement saying that the train is coming on the right side of the platform. [Music] Oh, wait. Maybe I should set before. Are these people transfer this up? I think they are. Oh, wow. It’s cross seats. That’s cool. Most of the seats here are long seats. But not long seats or cross seats. And this one is like at the back. Fore! Foreign! Foreign! [Music] The next stop is Sakuro. Please change here for the Nambaku subway line or the Toho Sapo. Okay, we are at Sapoto station and this was the first out of the three trains we’re going to be taking today. Look at how big this station building is. It says over there Sori and with this cool looking clock. Sorry, I keep forgetting to show you the time. Uh it is 8:14 right now and I got off the train at 8:08. So, the next train I have to take comes at 11:08, which means I have almost 3 hours to kill. And I was wondering what I can do at Sapoto at 8:00 in the morning. I was like looking up places and then it seems like many seafood restaurants are open right now, especially the ones near the seafood market. Because of how things turned out yesterday, most of my food were just like kini food. I want to make up for that today by eating a lot of good Hokkaido food. And we’re going to be starting off strong by eating seafood. It is about a mile away. And I could take the subway there, but I want to walk. It’s a really nice weather today. And I couldn’t get to walk that much yesterday because I was just on the train for like 11 to 12 hours. I want to feel a little bit more active. I feel like I have to earn this seafood. It says we’re about 3 minutes away to that store. But it’s hard to believe that there’s a fish market around here. Oh, there’s actually several seafood restaurants around here. Ah, it smells so fishy here. Quite literally. Oh, there it is. Oh, there’s already a line. Jeez. I think this store opened at 7:00 a.m. It’s only been an hour and a half, but there’s already like three things sold out. That is wild. Staff is taking orders before people are seated. So, I’m pretty sure the food will be ready once I get a seat. Yeah, the food came right after I got seated. [Music] Okay, I finished eating. It was good. It was really good. I’m going to be heading back to Sapoto station. Oh, it seems like there’s like a marathon event going on. Oh, wait. Today is Hokkaido marathon. Damn, that’s a pretty big event. Okay, I am back at Sapoto station and the next train I’m going to be taking is this one at 11:06 heading towards Iwam Mizawa station. I know earlier in the video I said I’m going to be taking three trains, but I’m actually going to be taking four trains this video. I don’t know why, but I thought the next two trains I’m going to take was just like one train, but it was two separate trains. There’s like a decent number of people that’s going to take this train. I probably should have lined up earlier. [Music] Let’s see if we can sit. [Music] Good night. Yes. Okay, so I just got off at Euami Zawa station. The next train I have to take comes in about 15 minutes. Okay, this is the train we’re going to take next. A local train leaving at 12:03 heading to Asahikawa station. Before my train leaves at 12:03, I heard that there’s going to be a limited express train coming at 12. So, I thought it would be cool to check it out. [Music] I want to see if there’s a bathroom here because it’s going to be kind of a long ride, an hour and a half. [Music] She’s so long. Oh, that’s a fancy bathroom for a fancy hotel. Well, I don’t know if it’s fancy. Walker. What I appreciate about these like local trains traveling a long distance is that they always have a bathroom. Without that, I would have peed my pants. Yeah, it’s just a generic looking bathroom. And then the flush button and you can use this to wipe the seat and then where you can walk around. There’s also a very informative guide for those who don’t know how to use the toilet. It says do not sit like this, stand like this, or this. What a useful guide. And there’s also extra toilet paper just in case you have a big emergency. I’m done. Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] We are here at Asahala station at 1:38 p.m. And then from here, we have to wait until 3:10 p.m. to take our last train which is about an hour and a half from now. The last train is absolutely wild. I’m gonna have to be mentally prepared for it. Hocado is doing like a collab with I don’t know who that is. All right, since I have an hour and a half, I think I’m going to get lunch. Although I’m not that hungry because I ate the seafood rice bowl. I have to eat something right now before I take my next train because the next train I’m taking is going to be over a 4hour train ride. No transfer, just straight up 4 hours. Here’s the overall vibe around the station. There’s a Eon Mall that’s front of the That’s a station building. And there’s a lot of hotels around here. Wow. The place I want to go to for lunch is a popular yaki tori restaurant called Gino or something. I want it’s a 10-minute walk from here. I want to see how crowded it is. if it’s not that crowded and we can eat there. It’s over there. It’s called Okay, we are back at Asahikawa station and it is 2:50 p.m. So, I have about 20 minutes left before my next train comes. So, I actually wanted to try this food called Shinkoyaki over there because that’s one of Asahikawa’s famous food. But I s on the menu and it said that it would take about 30 minutes to an hour to make. I couldn’t take the risk of missing this train because I have to take this train. So I gave up on that and got something else instead. But that’s something else was I forgot the name of it. But that’s also one of famous fruit too. So in the end it’s all good. But the next time I come here, I definitely want to try the shinuyaki. I know I’ll definitely come here again because I have to pass by the station to go to Japan’s northernmost train station. That’s something I’ll definitely make a video about in the future. [Music] The last train I’m going to be taking today is this Kaisami that’s leaving at 3:10 p.m. Heading towards Abishidi station. And that is where I’ll actually be getting off at. Oh, I said Abishidi. Sorry, I meant Abashidi. This is probably be overthinking, but I do have almost full one liter of water over here. But thinking that this is going to be a 4hour ride and there’s no vending machine inside the train. I just bought another water just in case. [Music] I must eat you today. [Music] [Music] Okay. [Music] Thank you. [Music] So, we’re just like halfway in. It is 5:08 right now. And the train stopped all of the sudden. It’s been stopping for like 5 minutes. So, I’m not sure what’s going on. Okay, we’re moving again. Thank God. I thought the train is going to stop moving all of a sudden already. [Music] [Music] Mr. [Music] Thank you for using JR Volkaido. This is the Kongi rapid train down for Al Shiri. At the automatic doors, complete front luggage and next to the door to exit the train. Please. [Music] So, we’re at the station called Rushidob or something, which is this one. And yeah, despite the train stopping for like 5 or 10 minutes, it’s now back on time. Shout out to the train driver probably. [Music] We’re at the station called Kami and there’s also the first JR freight train we’re seeing in Hokkaido. [Music] And it’s 7:34 p.m. right now. And then I just heard the train announcement saying that the next stop is the last stop. And we’re going to arrive there at 7:41. I did say it’s like a 4hour train ride. I take that back. It was actually a 4 and 1/2 hour train ride. 30 minutes is a big difference, especially when you’re on these local trains. What I noticed after filming yesterday and today’s video is that I think there are other people who are doing the same type of challenge as me because yesterday I saw someone from Sai taking the same train as me until Morioa or even Hajino station and today there’s this group of two people across me and I saw them ever since I got on the train at Sapoto station. Nice seeing other people doing similar things. [Music] Okay, we are here at Alpashidi station at 7:42 p.m. And that was the last train of today’s video. Oh, my body feels so stiff. 4 and 12 hour train ride. I think this is the longest train ride I’ve ever been on. This felt just as tough. Oh, hello. Hi. No. Uh, America. Oh, see me, too. Are you from Can you’re from America? Yeah. Oh, what? What state? New York. Oh, New York. Okay. Nice. I’m from Hawaii. Yeah. I see you. I see you. All right. That would definitely be in the video. where they try to troll. The first thing I’m going to do is find my hotel, which is 2 minutes away from the station. And after that, I made a reservation for this yakiniku store. And then there I’m going to eat jingish, which is lamb meat and is one of Hokkaido’s famous food. We are here at the place I’m staying at called Hotel San Abashidi. It was like what, 6,000 yen per night. Okay, there’s a bicycle here. I wonder we can rent them. It’s not auto lock. [Music] Okay. Yeah, this is totally fine. I’m only staying here for a night anyway. Okay, so now I’m going to go to the restaurant. Uh it is a 11 minute walk from here. In fact, I’m very grateful I’m walking because sitting your down for 4 and 1/2 hours isn’t necessarily fun. It’s nice to sit for a bit, but not this much because I walked like 2 miles both at Saporo and Asai so far. Right now, I walked a total of 13,000 steps. That is not bad. Oh, there goes the train. I think we took Is it? I I think this is heading back to Asai. It is a little bit spooky, but it’s very promising seeing cars pass by. And there’s also two other people walking towards the same direction as I, so it feels nice. Well, I’m only saying that because, you know, there’s so many bear related news recently, especially Hokkaido. I made sure to look at the bear encounter map for the areas I’m visiting. And for Abashidi, there were bear encounters, but not like at the main part of the city, like the urban part of the city. It was more like the area outside of it, like the mountain area. So, yeah, we should be good. Oh, look at that. Mart on the left side. I mean, I could stop by here. Maybe I should. I don’t think I saw any combination. Oh, wait. I found it. It’s over here. Got to walk all the way there because that’s the closest crosswalk. I cross the road and we are here at Yakuru Abashi. All right, here’s the jingish I ordered and I also got cabbage kimchi. [Music] We just put two for now. How about now? Oh, that looks so good. Oh, there you go. It had this lamblike aftertaste, but once I put it in the grill longer, I didn’t really taste that. I also got like this Wagyu set. I forgot what is what, but it looks good. Keep in mind people, I don’t think this is like the A5 Wagyu. It It just said Wagyu set. So, I’m just going to put There’s like three different ones. It’s cooking. The risky thing about yaki niku is that you can get like the most expensive and high quality meat, but if you have to cook it yourself, in the end, the taste will depend on how you freaking do it. So, you can get like a 10,000 yen wagu beef, then you freak it up, then it’ll probably taste the same as a 2,000 yen beef or something. Okay, this this grill is weird. Like on the on the left side, it gets like heated, but on the right side, no reaction at all. I think Yeah. Here you go. Yeah. Yeah. So, like I put it here, it’s like freaking burning as heck. But if I put it here, it’s like quiet. I like how soft it is. I definitely overestimated my eating ability and I ordered way more than I thought. Holy crap. I usually don’t eat breakfast, too. So, this was the first time in a while where I ate three meals a day. Maybe I shouldn’t eat that much tomorrow. [Music] 2 liter is usually cheaper than one. [Music] What the heck? This is 159 yen. This corn is 159. Yep. Soup is 159. This all the chicken pepperoni is one. Oh my god, that is actually okay. Hey, I got my brunch for tomorrow at Seiko Mart. I don’t have time to eat lunch tomorrow, so I’m going to eat this before I get on the train. I’ll leave it at that because I don’t want to reveal too much information. I don’t know how to put this on correctly, but anyway, as for how I feel, uh, way less stressful than yesterday for sure. The hardest part was the last train where I was on it for like 4 and 1/2 hours. That’s probably the longest time I’ve been on a local train. Tomorrow I don’t have to wake up that early, so I’m going to take this advantage to rest as much as possible. And also tomorrow, if everything goes as planned, I should be able to get to Nimo station. All right, that’ll be it for today’s video. If you want to see the next part of this series, it will be over here once it’s up. Thank you for watching. See you guys later. Bye-bye.

4:13 tomato station😂😂
I really want to do this. And Tanner's journey is nothing short of what I had imagined before.
I had trouble memorising if it's Tomakomai or Komatomai or Tomatomai or Komakomai too when I visited. I think I've used at least a couple versions of them to the conductors and they managed to understand it without problem. 😅
so you up up north from tokyo using local. next should be from tokyo to way way south!!!
北海道内移動するだけで夜になってて草
Im one of the guys who took a train from Sapporo to Wakkanai before. Its fun – 6 hours on train
petition to have tanner start doing 4k window view videos too
Open up a train window cleaning business in Hokkaido.
???
Profit.
The War of Art, by Tzu Sun.
This kind of thing is what worries me when I get to Japan, if I'm on a local train in the middle of nowhere (or even in the middle of somewhere) ands there's an announcement in 日本語 which I won't understand. But that's part of the adventure!
The others were probably using a ticket like the Seishun 18 Kippu – Local trains only obviously
Great views and challenge. I'll wait, when you take Trans-Siberian journey – 7+ days of stunning views from mountains of Far Eastern Russia, lake Baikal and spacious East European and West-Siberian plains! Greetings from Russia!
Good afternoon, Tanner!
I am very enjoying your video now, good to eat some snacks 😎 (2:40 PM)
Did a similar journey more than 30 years ago, except that we went to Wakkanai, the Northernmost station, then walked to Soyamisaki and then down the coast to Mombetsu and Engaru.
It was in February, so absolutely freezing with the wind factor, and we were camping (!) but we dug kamakuras or snow holes, and used a little MSR portable stove for cooking.
Locals thought we were crazy, but had donations of sake and warm bread as we journey south. Great trip, with photos of icebergs coming down from the sea of Okhotsk.
Petition for Tanner to visit the highest station in Japan? And the lowest (might be subway)?
Great Video Tanner I am just wondering why you needed two days for Hokkaido. I might be wrong but it looks like the Hokkaido distance was shorter than the Honshu distance.
This reminds me of my unplanned solo trip from Shin Osaka Station to Kinnosaki in Hyogo countryside. I rode several local trains because why not and I was sleeping 😂😂😂 Had someone wake me up somewhere in Fukuchiyama. That was late 2023, I cant forget it and I was happy my Japanese ability led me to the countryside without problems 😂😂😂
I am so happy that the whol ordeal was safe especially I am a solo female traveler
Now I wanna try the same route as you did
I like these types of videos because public transport makes me nervous for someone reason, i couldn't do something like this ever! 😅
If Bears are such a thing there birds look pretty nice now, right?😂

It's cool that you will later go to wakkanai it gets a bit cooler up there. If you have time in wakkanai, you should walk up to wakkanai Park as there are a lot of deer's . When I was there, a doe and her baby calf just a few days old walked across my path . The scenery going there is so different from the main land Japan it's like the scenery you saw . One thing about Japan is that it's safe to walk around at night, and the seicomart has the best fried chicken 🍗 in Hokkaido.
doing the most eastern, mentioning doing the most northern. also need to do the most southern and westerly ones.
I remember I was at “Tomato” station ( 4:09 ) with a friend on trying to catch a bus to the West port where we got off a few days before, when we realised we actually had to go to the East port about 15km away. The next train that would have gotten us there wouldn’t arrive for another 2 hours so we shelled out 7500 yen for the trip so we wouldn’t miss the ferry. The driver told us that no one really goes the the East port since the only ferries docking there make stops along the Sea of Japan, and the one we were boarding (via Akita) was essentially the only service at the East.
I'm always alarmed when I see a public toilet somewhere where there is a need to post instructional posters.
What is happening with such frequency that such posters become necessary?
Note that interestingly this “rapid” train you take is actually a brand new service downgraded from a limited express train, and by being downgraded you successfully save an incredible amount of time
Just curious. When you were at Iwamizawa Station, there was a train heading towards Tomakomai at 13:03, meaning there is direct service between Tomakomai and Iwamizawa. Why then did you have to transfer through Sapporo to get to Iwamizawa?
Beautiful scenery and loved the food 🙂
Oooh I was in Sapporo the same day and wondered why all the main roads were closed before I realised there was a marathon going to happen 😅
20:40 u forgot it was already night🤣😂 the staff hotel says 'konbawa'
You should have talked about the 4th train being diesel.
Was the last train diesel?
this is already making me sleepy just watching haha, i've gotten up waaaaaaay early for long train journeys like this so it's a familiar feeling. excited to see where your journey takes you 🙂
Seico Mart is the underrated GOAT of conbini. Cheap, huge, good. Their fried chicken got me through the 4 long winters I spent in Hokkaido. The breads are like 20% bigger than all other conbini brand breads. And they all have a really big wine selection?
Do you notice, viewer, how all the buildings seem to be set kind of far apart compared to the rest of Japan? That's for winter. Those gaps fill with mountains of snow. It's incredible! It's also a huge hassle!
Anyway the nostalgia factor is huge here. Iwamizawa, where you find the best Indian restaurant on the island. Asahikawa, where I saw some kind of El Camino club out one summer night. Kitami, not so far from where my friend lived out by the giant crab claw. Abashiri, where I persuaded the other prisoner I was chained to that we could break out together
Hi Tanner, any chance you could show us some of the Shinkansen work at Sapporo station the next time you're there?
I know it's a hopeless dream but there really needs to be a Seikan Tunnel local that stops at all the emergency escape points m/
Nice Trip! I lived in Sapporo in the mid 2000's and also took that Ferry from Tomakomai to Hachinohe, on the cheapest ticket! bloody awful overnight ride, got no sleep, I do not recommend lol
Just a notice for the fact that in the 2030's Sapporo will be the terminus for the Hokkaido Shinkansen that starts in Tokyo station…
I heard that the service will start between 2029/2032… Be patient!
I thought regular passenger trains go through the tunnel too. Maybe those are express train?
"I think this is the longest train ride I've ever been on"
dies in American where a train from Boston to Chicago is 19 hours (if it's on time which it won't be)
I don't know how you do it, but your videos are always so comfy, I almost fell asleep, especially with these long train rides. Makes for great late-night videos.
That guy was defintely trying to troll lol hahahah
If he was from New York he could speak better English, I guess… 😂
Greetings from Barcelona, Spain!
4 hours is not too bad, done a similar length with Scotrail on the route to Britain's westernmost station
I would love to know what the price difference it would be between these local trains and the shinkansen for this trip.
I coundn't wait for Part 2 👍
I love your humor and the the style of your videos. The balance between talking and POV experience is just perfect. 😊
Thanks for your videos, it's great fun to travel together with you 🫶👍☺️
