Otaru Winter Day Trip | Hokkaido’s Most Romantic Town

Today we are going on a day trip to Otaru. It’s about 40 minutes from Sapporo station. The scenery rolling past the window makes winter feel straight out of a fairytale. Sankaku Market opens at 8, and we’re here for one thing: Kaisendon breakfast. Every seafood I’ve ever craved is right here on this menu. Adding surf clam sashimi as a side dish It’s sweet, rich, and satisfyingly chewy. We got the 3-combo Kaisendon. Uni, ikura, crab – all in one bowl! And yes… it comes with a crab claw on top! Heading over to the canal to take in the charming winter town views. Found this cosy spot to warm up with some sweets and drinks. This timber-framed cafe is lit with 167 glass oil lamps, each handcrafted on site. Ordered the Kitaichi special royal milk tea and chiffon cake. The chiffon cake is so light and fluffy! Browsing some beautiful locally made glass pieces right next to the cafe. Checking off another bucket list item: Music Box Museum during Christmas. There’s something about this season that makes it feel romantic. I was hunting for the “First Love” music box… but sadly, it’s sold out. [Banana coffee] Making our way back to the canal for that perfect winter evening atmosphere. There are a few LeTAO stores in Otaru, each with its own unique treats. Otarta (looks like a cheese tart) is exclusive to this store. Ahh, it’s sold out!! so we went for the soft serve with its signature Fromage cheesecake. Since Christmas is just around the corner, we wanted to celebrate early with a nice dinner to mark the season. This Italian restaurant would be a lovely way to wrap up the day with something special. Otaru Pilsner The onion soup is baked with croutons and cheese. A hearty little beginning, perfect for a cosy winter night. The beef flakes are made with grass-fed cattle from the Tokachi region of Hokkaido. So buttery and flavourful, it just melts away. The main reason we’re here – uni pasta. It’s beautiful, but honestly, it wouldn’t be complete without the Tokachi beef toro pasta. Hope watching this brought a little warmth to your Christmas. That wraps up our winter day in Otaru! Asahikawa awaits for the next leg of our Hokkaido journey!

It’s been on our bucket list to see Otaru’s romantic charm during Christmas. This winter trip finally made that dream come true.
