Following Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Takaichi Sanae, 64, former Minister of Economic Security, was chosen as the person to lead Japan’s political situation. If he becomes the next prime minister, who is so conservative that he is called “Girl Abe,” Japan is expected to return to the right, causing conflicts with neighboring countries, including South Korea.

On the 4th, a far-right lawmaker Takaichi Sanae was elected after a close race from the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election held at the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters in Nagata-cho, Tokyo, Japan, to the run-off election. It will be the first female president in the 70-year history of the Liberal Democratic Party and the first female prime minister in history when selecting a prime minister.

He won 183 votes in the first round of voting, which combined 295 votes from 295 lawmakers and 295 votes from party members (Japanese nationals paying party fees) and members of political groups sponsored by the Liberal Democratic Party. In second place was Shinji Koizumi, who received 164 votes, the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister. In the second round of voting, 295 lawmakers voted and 47 local organizations voted. Here, support from lawmakers and local organizations continued, beating Koizumi, who received 185 votes and reached the final vote together.

Takaichi first ran for president in 2021. Last year, he lost to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in the final round, but this time he won the position of president after his third attempt.

Japan, which adopts a parliamentary cabinet system, has a structure in which the ruling Liberal Democratic Party president becomes the official prime minister through an election to nominate a prime minister in the National Assembly. Although the Japanese National Assembly is currently in a “female opposition” situation, it is not easy to gather between opposition parties. Governor Takaichi is expected to succeed current Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba without difficulty.

An extraordinary session of the National Assembly is scheduled to be held on the 15th to select the prime minister. After the prime ministerial nomination election, President Takaichi will announce his cabinet appointments and receive a letter of appointment from the Emperor.

In a speech after his election, President Takaichi said, “I will abandon myself for the country and give up ‘work-life balance’ and work hard,” adding, “Japan should show the world the value of solidarity and tolerance while countries around the world are struggling with confrontation and military tensions.”

President Takaichi started with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is a far-right, and has shared ideology by taking important posts in the party and cabinet, including the general affairs minister, during the first and second Abe’s cabinet. It is feared that the conservatives who supported him in the upcoming presidential election will not hesitate to act to stimulate neighboring countries in order to regain the glory of the past. Meanwhile, an official from the government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 4th, “We will continue to communicate closely with the new cabinet and cooperate to continue the positive flow of Korea-Japan relations.”
