The operator of the Yamanote line in Tokyo is marking the 100th anniversary of the train route’s completion as a full loop. Some of the train cars are decorated to evoke memories of the past.

The loop was completed in November 1925, when an elevated track between Ueno and Tokyo stations was opened.

East Japan Railway started operating trains with two retro designs on Saturday. One is the 103 series introduced in the 1960s, which features an all light green body.

The other is the 205 series, which replaced the 103 series and has a horizontal light green stripe on the silver body.

As the trains entered Osaki Station, railway fans gathered to take photos and went on board.

The station master says they are preparing various events at stations along the Yamanote Line, hoping that many people will visit and enjoy them.

The commemorative trains are scheduled to operate until November 3.
