Japanese travel platform Rakuten Travel has introduced small cities near Nagoya, Tsumagojuku and Magomejuku. The two villages, which used to be shelters for travelers in the Edo period, are still known as travel destinations where the past and the present coexist, and Rakuten Travel recommended two accommodations in downtown Nagoya for travelers visiting this place.

Tsumago-Juku and Magome-Juku are the 42nd and 43rd towns of Nakasendo. To this day, it is evaluated as a village with a well-preserved old atmosphere. You can enjoy cultural exploration and healing in nature together in the quiet scenery unique to the small city.

Tsumagojuku is considered the national historic site designated by the Japanese government and the “most beautifully preserved old village in Japan.” Since it was designated as an important traditional building conservation area in 1976, residents have defended the village by establishing three principles: “not selling, not lending, not destroying.” Thanks to this, travelers can walk on the old road and get a glimpse of life at the time.

The 8km Nakasendo section from Tsumago-Juku to Magome-Juku is popular as a trekking course along forests and valleys. The street, which is connected by terraced stone roads, wooden houses, and small tea houses, retains the scenery where travelers from the Edo period stayed.

In the two villages, you can also see the accommodation culture of the time reflecting class society. Honjin and Waki Honjin, where local lords or high-ranking officials stayed, were built in a luxurious style. It is now restored as a museum to show the accommodation culture of the upper class.
