During my visit to Nijo Market in Sapporo, I decided to try the famous Hokkaido melon. The Yubari melon is grown in the region of the same name near Sapporo and is known for being juicy and very sweet.
While strolling through the market, I came across a little old lady selling melons, excitedly attracting attention. I stopped and asked the price. She showed me the cheapest one, then pointed to the most expensive one (1,000 yen) and said it was the premium one and that it was the best.
I asked, "Ichiban?" (The number one/the best of all).
And she replied, "The best… For me, you are the best," and laughed. I bought the premium melon and ate it right there.
After I finished eating, I thanked the little lady and asked if I could take a picture of her.
She picked up the melon and held it up to her face, giving me what I thought looked like a melon smile.
This photo became a memory that I keep fondly.
