Thirty-three fifth graders from Izumo Municipal Asahi Elementary School in Shimane Prefecture experienced freshwater clam fishing at Lake Shinji in the city on September 24. Boarding boats in groups of three to four, they scooped up clams from the lake bottom using a 30-kilogram tool called “joren,” with the help of fishers. The students were delighted to find large amounts of clams inside. They also worked on sorting the clams into three groups based on size.
