MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Hakuna Matata Koi originated by accident and evolved into a passion for providing high-quality koi to local pond owners and koi enthusiasts.
Owners Melissa and Mike Watkins operate as a small Nishikigoi (koi) dealer, acquiring koi for retail for pond owners and koi enthusiasts.
They say they love seeing the happiness these koi bring to people, as many enjoy watching them as a way to relax and de-stress after a day’s work. They say people don’t realize how fun and comical the fish can be. The koi learn who their owners are and can become rather personable, even eating out of people’s hands.
Hakuna Matata grew from tubs in their home garage into a storefront in Mesa. As it grew, the Watkins incorporated shipping their koi to other hobbyists in the United States. Then, they applied for and received their import license, allowing them to import directly from Japan.
They focused on promoting one main Japanese breeder — Nagoshi Koi Farm, in Toyama Prefecture. Nagoshi’s koi have even been entered into koi shows by a Hakuna Matata customer and have won several awards, proving they cater to every level of the hobby.
Hakuna Matata offers quality koi for backyard pond enthusiasts, as well as for the Koi Kichi (koi-crazy) collector, and for customers who want to showcase their koi and appreciate high quality.
