TOKYO – A fire broke out Monday at a demolition site near Tokyo’s Haneda airport, though the incident did not affect air traffic and there was no report of injuries, first responders and the transport ministry said.
An emergency call reporting black smoke and fire at the site in Ota Ward was made at around 9:10 a.m. The blaze was extinguished some two hours later.
According to Tokyo police and firefighters, the fire occurred at a building that was used as a hangar, burning about 900 square meters of the roof.
At least 20 people are believed to have been working on demolishing the building at the time. A witness said the fire broke out when metal poles were being cut, according to the police.
The site is located about 1.2 kilometers northwest of Haneda airport’s Terminal 3.
