TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation of Japanese lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party arrived in Taiwan on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations.
The group is led by Matsuyama Masaji, the LDP caucus leader in the House of Councillors. The delegation is expected to meet President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release.
The delegation also includes three other members of the House of Councillors: Watanabe Takeyuki, Ueno Michiko, and Horii Iwao. The group will return to Japan on Tuesday after meetings with Taiwanese officials and with Taiwan–Japan Relations Association Chair Su Jia-chyuan (蘇嘉全).
During their meeting with the president, the lawmakers will discuss regional developments, economic security, and bilateral cooperation, per MOFA. They also plan to visit Kaohsiung to pay respects at the memorial statue of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
The foreign ministry welcomed the visit, saying Matsuyama is an experienced leader with a deep understanding of regional issues and that his trip will contribute substantively to strengthening Taiwan–Japan relations.
