You must Visit Chiran! | City of World War II History

In this video, I will show you a one-day trip to Chiran in Kagoshima where the tragic suicide bomb attack had their point of departure during the World War II. Good morning, Kagoshima. It is 9:00 a.m. in the morning and the temperature is so low. I am walking the street to head to the bus stop. Today, I’m going to visit a war museum in Chiram in Koshima. I visited a war memorial called the Chiron Peace Museum in Kagoshima. It is about 1 hour and 30 minutes by bus from central Kagoshima city. Buses depart several time a day from bus stops in Kaiicho and the Tongan. To ride the bus in Kushima, be sure to take a ticket from the dispenser at the entrance of the bus. When getting off the bus, the fair is shown according to the number printed on your ticket. So, don’t forget to take one. The final stop of this bus service is the entrance of a war memorial and war museum in Chiran Hiroshima. As the bus winds its way deeper into the mountains, you can watch the landscape shift outside the window. Rolling hills blanketed in lush greenery. While Chilean is best known for its peace memorial museum, it also offers other attractions like the samurai residential area and the hotel shako museum. On this visit, I decided to get off at the bus stop for the samurai residence area. I was on the bounce for 90 minutes. Now I am at the entrance of a war memorial area. But this is this area called the Bukayashki area. So I am going to see something here first and walk into the war memorial later. Centered around the main street, you can see buildings that were constructed two to 300 years ago. In particular, seven of these houses have beautiful Japanese garden that are open to the public. So it looks like this area is a historic district. It preserves old houses and buildings. So the building behind me should be one of the very old old houses in this area. And then show the showcases the history of this region I guess. Okay, I particularly like this garden. This was built about 270 years ago and still keeps some part of original design. Look at that rocks, trees, everything. It’s like a a ink wash painting for me and it’s very beautiful. If you enjoyed my video about the one day trip, please don’t forget to subscribe to my channel. Now I’m heading to the another war memorial called the hotel restaurant museum. This is a place where the restaurant owner serves the last meal for the pilot for the last mission of kamicazi attack. This must be very tragic price. During the war, several restaurants in Chiran were seized by the Juna and repurposed as exclusive dining establishments for military personnel. This building was originally a restaurant run by Tom Hammer, a woman food devotedly supported young Japanese pilots before their suicide missions known as Kamika attacks. You will find exhibits that explore the deep connections between the pilots and the Tom Hammer. The restaurant is named Hotaru, meaning firefly. This is based on a true story. The night before his mission, a pilot told that he would return as a firefly after his death. The day after his departure, a single firefly appeared inside the restaurant just as he had said. It is a truly moving story. It is Sunday today. So, uh most shops closed and then uh there’s not much public public transport in this area. So, I have to walk from the the museum I just visited to another museum. Now I’m heading. So, uh it’s is very long distance. The distance is like 1.5 km. So, it will take about half an hour to get there. There are thousands of stone lanterns along the road to the former Chiran airfield. If you have a closer look at these, you will see the names of pilots engraved on them. These were donated by the pilot families and supporters beginning in 1956 when Tom Hammer laid the very first lantern. Originally, there were 1,036 stone lanterns. That is a number of pilots who died for the special missions. About 40 minutes after leaving the hotel toy shaken museum, I arrived at the former Chiran airfield. The former Chiran airfield was in operation from 1941 to 1945. Thousands of aircraft took off on a suicide mission to defend Okinawa. It now consists of residential areas and farmland. Yet walking along the road built on the old runways, you can still see much of the same scenery that the pilots must have seen as they prepared for their final flights. Now I’m actually walking on the runway of a former air base for the kamikaza attack. Hundreds of young pilots departed from here to do the final mission kamikazu attack towards the Okinawa region. So this is a very very historic area monument or the location place for Japanese history. My last destination for the day was the Chiran Peace Museum for kamikaz pilots. This museum houses exhibits of actual aircraft used in suicide mission as well as pilot farewell letters and personal belongings. Thank you for watching my video. The building behind me has a display of airplane which is used for a chemical detect about 80 years ago. So this must be some historic place to visit. Photography inside the museum is limited to the fighter plane that was recovered from the ocean in 1980. While I didn’t have much background information, half of the aircraft body is missing. I was deeply moved by the figure of the airplane. [Music] [Music] I don’t [Music] [Music] The airplane behind me is actually a plane used for coming attack. had just recovered after the war from the ocean. The half half of the body was gone. So then it looks so um tragic and so feel so sad now. This triangular barrack is where the pilots spend their final days before taking off. It was built half underground to conceal it from American reconnaissance planes. Beside the barrack stone lanterns have been dedicated in memory of the young pilots who gave their lives in their nation special operations. I just finished visiting this war memorial in Chiran and Kagoshima. There are hundreds of object photos and memories and there are airplane which was used for kamikazi attack in the past. So now I feel so sad and this me museum is one of the very must visit place in Kagoshima I guess. Finally no trip to Chiron is complete without a meal at the Chiran tea house. This restaurant in run by the great grandson of Tom Hammer and features film set used in a movies depicting the lives of kamikaza pilots. Here you can enjoy dishes faithfully recreated from the original menu of the historic Tomia Shakudo restaurant. After experience the purple exhibit at the Chiron Peace Memorial Museum, the tea house offers a meaningful and memorable place to deflect and is well worth a visit. Mashi, Chiron, Teushima.
