Narrow is not the only place in Japan where you can meet free roaming deer. If you want to go somewhere less crowded, less touristy, and way more peaceful, then you need to come to Miaima Island. It’s just an hour’s journey from Noshima and makes for the perfect day trip. There is so much to do here, so many cute deers, and Miaima is actually the home of the enormous floating Tori gate, which is one of Japan’s most iconic sites. So, it’s pretty simple to get out here. You just have to catch a train and then a ferry. And we use the JR Kai to Hiroshima area pass because it provides you with unlimited rides on a bunch of Shinkansen and train lines. And it also includes the Miaima ferryy. The pass is valid for 5 days and it made our time in Hiroshima super convenient. When you visit the Tori gate, I also highly recommend walking through the beautiful Itsukushima ginger shrine. Here you can get your own to bring you good fortune and protection. We chose the ones with deers on it as I felt like it was the perfect moment for today. You can also visit the Miaima Aquarium where they have all kinds of incredible sea life and enjoy the traditional shopping street to pick up some amayyag for your friends at home. If you’ve got time on the way to or from Miaima Island, you should also stop at the Samos Art Museum. This is one of the most stunning museums I’ve ever been to, with each exhibition being housed inside a shipping container on the water. This is the first museum I’ve been to where the exterior is just as intriguing as the interior. All in all, I had such a fantastic day exploring somewhere I’d never been to before in Japan.
