Tokyo Street Food Akihabara Edition! The Best Snacks You Can’t Miss

[Music] If you think Akiabara is just about arcades and anime, you’re missing half of the experience. In this video, I’m taking you on a tour of the most mouthwatering and underrated street foods in Tokyo. From takoyaki to crepes, this is the ultimate guide to snacking around Akiabara. Stick around to the end of this video because I’ll tell you my favorite street food of the day so you know exactly which one to eat during your next trip to Tokyo. [Music] So, if you’ve never been to Akiabar before, it is loaded with anything that you love about anime. If you love arcades, in fact, I’m like, holy crap. Like, you got to you guys got to look at this right here. I’m going to turn you around. That whole building right there is just a big arcade. Yeah, that’s just one big arcade. And there are buildings that are just 10 to 12 stories just full of anime, manga, anime figures, and anything you would ever want if you’re an anime fan. But we love anime, so we’ve come here a lot. We haven’t had a chance to really dive into the street food yet. And right now, they turn this road into a pedestrian street. We’re in the middle of the road. Woo! Look at this. We’re all walking on the roads. We’re going to start off with the fried chicken sandwich first. I know that sounds weird for a street food, but we’ve passed by this place like a 100 times coming here. And now, like, now’s my excuse to eat a fried chicken sandwich here in Tokyo. I am super hungry. So, our first stop is actually going to get something a little bit more substantial in my system. We’re at Hikara Fried Chicken, a little bit off one of the main roads here in Akiabara. It’s it’s a little like fried chicken sandwich stall just like right on one of the main corners. And goodness, like right now it’s packed. There is some sort of like Pokémon Go event surrounded by people with their cell phones. So interesting street food day for sure. Our chicken burger has arrived in monumentous fashion. This thing is huge. Smells really nice. I’m not sure if that’s like a cheese sauce or if that’s like a special sauce, like a Chick-fil-A sauce. Let’s take our first bite. Bun is really soft. I’m excited. That is a glorious chicken sandwich, my friends. That is so delicious. Really juicy. And it is like a Chick-fil-A sauce. Kind of like mustard, mayonnaise, and this cabbage. I’m liking a lot. A lot of extra crunch, a lot of extra substance. Yeah, that sauce is slightly sweet. And that bun is so soft. Nice pillowy bun. Just kind of like disintegrates right in my mouth as I’m taking these bites. Perfect. My wife and I are both very hungry right now. Oo, French fries. Oh, these are crunchy French fries. The sauce tastes citrusy. Good, huh? Is it yuzu? Let’s see. I think I need another bite to confirm the sauce and its particular taste components. is yuzu. A creamy yuzu sauce and fried chicken. Say no more, my friends. We found ourselves a winner. Winner chicken sandwich dinner. Well, a lunch. Coming up next, we are still sticking to savory foods. We’re going to try to find something here. We’re going to walk around a little bit of the city area. See if we can stumble upon something really delicious. And there’s a big a big van with speakers just blasting something. Who knows what that is? All right. Well, we’re going to find something else that’s savory. Keep watching as we dance. [Music] We’re in like this transit tunnel that connects two different like big streets. And so in here there’s a lot of like different type of street food options. And we saw them making takoyaki. I’m like, I got to stop and get that right now. So takoyaki are octopus balls. And you can see them making them fresh. They’re kind of like sizzling away, kind of crispy on the outside. The texture is really unique cuz it should be crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, kind of gooey even. I know it sounds weird, but let’s try it. [Music] Oh, that’s got a crunch, baby. That’s got a crunch. The bonito flakes on top are like the first things I kind of smell and taste. Bonito flakes are like this dried fish and they shave into like really thin layers. adds a lot of umami to dishes, but and they have a little packet of mayonnaise. I put it right on top. Adds a little more creaminess to it, a little more richness. I love it. It’s cooked so perfectly. And the octopus, it’s like chew. You chew on it and it tastes like really, really freaking good. I don’t know what is a simple thing. The second you take a bite of that, all that like inside kind of gushes out. The bonito flakes kind of mixes in really well. I love takoyaki. It’s like this wonderful delicious like mess of a meatball almost. So, we’re going to get through this tunnel, get out to the main Oubar Road area, and I definitely need some more savory cuz I want to dive into sweets. There’s lots of great sweets around here, but savory. I need a little bit more in my system first. So, we’re going to find something really, really delicious, meaty, and unctuous next. So, we’re walking through like this transit tunnel here and then we kind of came along this place that has oniri and a few other things too. So, we’re stopped and now we’re getting a quick little oniri snack. Ongiri is warm. Got the tuna mayonnaise. [Music] It’s actually really freaking good. Way better than anything you get at the convenience store at Family Mart 7-Eleven. Nice. Lots of rice, too. This is like hefty. Yeah, for like like a $1.50, it’s actually pretty good. Pretty good deal. Going down the back streets of Akiabara by where those hidden anime shops with the good stuff, which we will not show you. we which we won’t show you. By the way, if you do want the good anime, it’s always in the top floors if you’re hunting down. I I mean, I wouldn’t know. I I’d never been in one of those before cuz we we would never do that ever. But we do come back here for smaller anime shops that can have some discounted stuff. Now, there’s a lot of girls dressed up on the side of the roads here. Those are for the hostess cafes and you kind of pay the money to go hang out with them for a little bit. Not what we need. We have each other right for free. We’re just walking down the street here and then we found I don’t just a sign that had an octopus on there and they have some sort of uh oyaki style dumpling dish where they take um some sort of filling sweet or savory put inside of a wheat flour, press it down and make it nice and crispy on the outside. I’ve never had anything like this so I’m not sure what to expect but it’s part of why you want street food. You don’t have to know what everything is. If it’s highly rated just stop. There’s plenty of street food around here, and it it probably is going to be overpriced in some some ways, but that’s okay. It’s okay to try something new. It’s okay to just wander and to just graze as you go along. It doesn’t always have to be perfect. It’s okay if you don’t like it. You can just throw it away. It’s not a big waste of money. It’s about the adventure and the hunt that makes it fun and memorable. So, just remember that when you’re around Akiabara and you want to try some of these street foods, you want to try some of the desserts, do what looks good and just hope for the best. So, I open this guy up here. Basically smells and looks like the inside of a dumpling except for it’s flat and it is crisp up on the inside. Okay, baby. Let’s go. Cheers. Here we go. Hot. [Music] It does taste like a dumpling. It tastes like a dumpling. The wrapper is really soft. It’s crispy, but not like super duper crispy, but the inside the middle is very soft. Kind of like a mochi is what it reminds me of a little bit. Inside is pork, scallions, some ginger. What do you expect from the inside of like a pot sticker? Pretty freaking good. I like this. I like it, too. Now, we’re on our way to find some kebab. I know kebab sounds like a weird street food in Tokyo, but for some reason in Akiabara, there are quite a few everywhere. They all claim to be the best. So, I’m going to try one and see how good it is. And it might be the best. Hopefully, we find the best one. I don’t know. Now, we’re going to try this chicken kebab sandwich. 500 yen. So that’s really freaking cheap. Like 500 yen for some chicken kebab. Let’s see if it’s worth it. I like the sauce. You like the sauce? I like the sauce. I mean, tastes solid. I mean, see here. This chicken by itself juicy, good texture, not overcooked. The spicy sauce a little bit creamy. I don’t know. Russians are like, it’s a solid five out of 10. Like it’s not like anything life-changing, but if you’re hungry at 500 yen, I mean, this is a pretty good like sizable sandwich here. If the street food is looking good to you, please leave me a comment. Which one looks like the best? Would you eat street food in Tokyo? Let me know in the comments. I’m still eating this, but we’re going to go make our way to find some desserts. We’re going to go on the main road where like all the entrances to a lot of the anime shops are. So, we’re going to go there, see if we find any street food, and then some more desserts. [Music] Got my sweet treat to start off. We saw this Tayyaki place. I got a custard one. And then I saw they had dauku, which is a like rice cake mochi that’s filled with things. This one has white bean and a strawberry. So, we’re going to start off with the dauku first. Look at that strawberry. It’s just so red and plump. Just waiting for me. Jeez, my mouth is like watering just talking. It’s just so soft. Booties are so soft. [Music] That’s really good. That texture is so good. Uber soft and squishy. That strawberry is like the most intense strawberry I think I’ve eaten in Japan. It is so delicious. Here, babe. Here, I’m going to get to my wife right now. She made the same face I did. She made the same face I did. And there’s a white bean in there, too. Let me just taste that white bean filling. So delicate. Lightly sweet. I know beans sound weird for desserts. I said it really. I know it sounds weird, but it is so good. You wouldn’t know that this is bean unless I told you. Here you go, baby. All right. Yummy. [Music] Now we got our custard fish. I already ripped him in half. So ripped his head off. Sorry. Sorry, fishy guy. [Music] It’s not very crunchy. I’ll give it that. Okay. But flavors are there. It just reminds you of like a waffle batter, you know, from like a waffle iron. Has a little bit of that smell of like that cooked batter inside a nice eggy custard. Street foods are hitting good today, guys. Akiabara has been a a winner winner here with just about everything we’ve eaten. Keep watching. We’re going to go down the main street here in Akiabara. See what we can find. Hopefully, it’s something good and we can keep this streak up. [Music] Behind me is a Wagu beef skewer place. And if you’ve gone to Sukiji Market or some of the other street food things that happen around the city, then you know these are really expensive. I’m sorry. It’s not worth it. $2,200 yen for like a Wagu skewer is outrageous. Yeah, that’s right. One skewer can cost you $15 here. Sorry, I’m not going to get it for the video. I know it’s going to be mediocre. It’s not It’s not I’m not going to waste my money on that. Okay. Instead, I’m going to get these strawberries, the candy behind me, as well as the really famous like 10 yen coin that’s filled with cheese. [Music] G 10 yen coin. I’ve already had to do the cheese pull. I couldn’t wait. Look at this. Still remnants. Remnants here. Look at this. Just hot gooey cheese. [Music] So really soft bread. Lots of cheese. Good cheese pull. Very delicious cheese. I’m not sure what type it is. Kind of neutral. Kind of tastes like a like a mozzarella stick. Probably mozzarella. It’s just kind of like a pancake, if that makes sense. Pancake filled with cheese. If you had some syrup on there, that’s a good breakfast. My candy strawberries. We tried these when we were at the Nakameodo, and this was one of my favorite things we had there. Let’s just bite right in. That’s great. It was like last time. The the strawberries are so juicy, you have to like slurp up when you’re doing this, when you’re eating it. We’re getting close to the end. Glad you guys have been sticking around, watching all this delicious street food. But there’s one more place we got to go. It’s going to be worth it. I promise you. It’s one of the best desserts you can have anywhere in the world. And it’s coming up next. [Music] We’re finishing off at Club Marion for crepes. And the crepe by Godz is wonderful. I mean, it has ice cream, it has chocolate drizzle, it’s got cheesecake, it’s got strawberries, it’s got whipped cream, it’s got bananas, and we paid a little extra for some Nutella in there, too, for good measure. I mean, could you think of a better crepe for dessert to finish off a street food fantastic day at a bar? I think not. Slice of cheesecake is in here. Okay, slice of cheesecake. That’s so good. That’s ridiculous. I’m loving the Nutella and the cheesecake is like makes it so perfect. Ice cream, whipped cream. It’s like chocolate richness with every single second it’s in your mouth. I’m really liking the crepe. The crepe is like such a good part. It’s like stretchy kind of like the right texture, you know? It’s not doesn’t like crumble apart. It’s not too crispy. Nice and chewy crepe, you know? I’m just going to take one more bite and then the rest is for my wife if she wants it. Now, just keep watching cuz I’m going to go over my favorite street food of the day up next. That was a great delicious day full of amazing street food in Akiabara. And everything was delicious. We loved everything that we ate, but there could only be one one winner. For me, it was the dauku strawberry mochi white bean on the inside. I mean, such a powerful bite of deliciousness and it was unexpected. I didn’t know that was even going to be there. So, to me, I like that. Babe, what was your favorite thing? Unexpected surprise. Unexpected surprises. The chicken sandwich. Any I love yuzu so much. It’s a very underrated flavor. I love it. And like it just is a very satisfying sandwich. Perfect. Well, there you have it. Dauku and the chicken sandwich. Get it the next time you’re in a barara. Don’t hesitate on the street food here. Got

So, would you eat street food in Tokyo? What looks the best?
Awesome video Chris! I would have to agree with your wife. That chicken sandwich with yuzu looked amazing. That would be the one I want to try.
