Although the 2025 Japan Open kicked off only a few days ago, there has already been some contentious behavior between the competitors. Danish star Holger Rune was involved in a tense showdown with opponent Hamad Medjedovic during their opening round match, leading to the latter making some brutal comments towards the former.

Both Rune and Medjedovic were competing in their first ATP event since the US Open a few weeks ago, with Rune having participated at the Laver Cup last week. The former World No.4 represented Team Europe, and was forced to watch Team World leave San Francisco with the title.

Nonetheless, the Danish star made the trip to Tokyo, where he is the third seed at the Japan Open. Rune has had an up-and-down North American hardcourt season, reaching the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Masters but falling in the second round at Flushing Meadows two weeks later.

Known for being volatile on court, Rune is prone to the occasional outburst. The 22-year old has a history of arguing with the umpire, and has exhibited behavior on court that some might deem as unsportsmanlike.

Medjedovic unhappy with Rune’s actions during the first set

With the first set tied at six games a piece, a tiebreak ensued. Rune would prevail 7-6(7), but Medjedovic had some choice words for the Dane as they approached the net.

Apparently, Medjedovic did not approve of some of Rune’s antics during the last few points of the first set. Furthermore, the Serbian had a set point, but failed to capitalize and wasted little time in telling Rune what he really thought of him.

“No one loves you, and this is proof,” said Medjedovic to Rune as both men returned to their benches. “You will never even apologize. Any normal human being would at least know how to apologize.”

Medjedovic would return to his seat, but resumed his diatribe in Rune’s direction.

“Nobody loves you,” he repeated. “All the people told me that. And I don’t really care what you’re going to tell me.”

The Serbian would turn his attention towards the umpire, with Rune not talking back or participating in the discussion.

The match would resume without any more interruptions, but Medjedovic seemed to have lost his motivation as Rune would cruise through the set to record a 7-6(7) 6-1 victory. Nonetheless, after the match both men would shake hands at the net without any more controversy.
