Carlos Alcaraz has praised his physio after recovering from a foot injury to advance to the Tokyo quarter-finals.

The Roland Garros and US Open champion had suffered a foot injury in his first round win over Sebastian Baez and was a doubt for his second round match in Tokyo.

However, Alcaraz returned to court and defeated Zizou Bergs in a comfortable 6-4 6-3 victory to reach the last eight in Japan.

It has been an impressive debut in Tokyo for Alcaraz so far as he bids for an eighth title of the season.

After the match Alcaraz said he has the best physio in the world as he completed an impressive second round win, “I have said it before and I will say it again, I have the best physio in the world, who I trust 100 per cent,” Alcaraz told the ATP website.

“The work he has done for the ankle has been great. I could play normally, which is great. Sometimes I was worried about some movements, when I could feel the ankle, but in general I played some great tennis, a great match.”

Next up for Alcaraz will be Brandon Nakashima who defeated Marton Fucsovics to reach the final eight.

Completing the quarter-final line-up today was Holger Rune as the Dane set up a last eight showdown with Jenson Brooksby after a 6-4 6-2 win over Ethan Quinn.

Ahead of his search for a second title of the season, Rune admitted he was happy with his performance against the young American, “I really sharpened my focus in the start of the sets,” Rune told the ATP website.

“I tried to hit quickly, it makes me more comfortable. He is a good player and has some weapons, but it was about trying to take them away from him and play on my terms and making fast starts made me feel better and made me relax more.”

All four Tokyo quarter-finals will take place on Sunday.
