Prince Hisahito, Emperor Naruhito’s nephew and second-in-line to the Chrysanthemum throne, visited the Osaka Expo on September 24 and 25.
This is his first solo official duty.
The prince arrived at the expo venue around 7PM on the 24th and made his first stop at the Japan Pavilion.
Hisahito looked at an exhibit of microbes that break down biodegradable plastic into water and carbon dioxide and asked many questions.
The prince said he felt he caught a glimpse of the future that Japan’s technology could bring.
Afterwards, Prince Hisahito went to the Belgium Pavilion and saw an exhibit about water and the latest technology about life sciences and healthcare.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to learn.
On the 25th, Prince Hisahito visited the Grand Ring which surrounds the venue and is recognized as the world’s largest wooden architectural structure.
The prince showed interest in the structure and the wooden material used in the design.
He noted that the 155-hectare expo venue is larger than the 115-hectare Imperial Palace.
Hisahito went to the Kansai Pavilion and touched sand from the Tottori Sand Dunes and fossilized dinosaur feces.
He said that the exhibits made him want to visit each area.
