If you were asked to name the world’s most popular travel destinations it probably wouldn’t be too tricky to come up with a list – right?
While places like Japan and the US are mainstays on the list of highly-visited spots, a few surprising locations can be found creeping up the top ten list.
Like, for example, Australia.

Holafly, a global leader in eSIM technology, has just released a new report, revealing the world’s top 10 most-visited destinations and emerging travel trends in 2025.

However, what’s most surprising is that this list is based on data from June to August – when it’s winter in Australia.
So even though we’ve got a rep for great weather and beaches, even when the mercury drops, our country still ranks among the best in the world.

According to Holafly, Australia’s appeal came through Melbourne’s creativity, Queensland’s sunshine, and Sydney’s coastal lifestyle.
Travellers also shouted out the great mix of modern cities and laid-back escapes.
Number one on the list of most-visited destinations is Spain.
The European country is certainly attractive, especially in summer, with its warm weather, Mediterranean beaches, plus its buzzy cities, rich culture and delicious food.

South Africa ranked number two on the list, which coincides with an increase in interest for travellers heading on wildlife safaris in Africa.
Japan came in at number three. The Asian country is super popular with Aussie travellers at the moment – it has seen a 60 per cent uptick in Australian visitors compared with pre-COVID 2019 figures.

Next up, Canada and the US made an appearance side by side on the list.
Just last month, San Diego in southern California was named the most “relaxing” place to take a holiday.
The US also has big drawcards for travellers in the form of Disney parks, beautiful nature, fun road trips, and big cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Next on the list is France, which is set to become even more popular in the coming years thanks to the latest season of The White Lotus, which is set to be filmed there.
