A Japanese man has gone viral for defying age norms by falling in love with his classmate’s mother, who is 21 years his senior.

The man even bought a home worth nearly 40 million yen (US$272,000) in an attempt to win over her parents.

Isamu Tomioka, now 33 and from Shizuoka Prefecture, first met Midori, who is now 54 and the mother of one of his classmates, during a parent-teacher meeting in his junior school days.

Later, when Tomioka was 30, he visited his old classmate’s beauty salon and was surprised to see Midori helping out there. He instantly recognised her and at that moment felt an immediate connection.

“I instantly fell in love with Midori,” he said, adding: “She is elegant, gentle and full of feminine charm.”

On learning she had recently divorced, he asked for her contact information.

Midori admitted she was “surprised” but also “very happy” to be pursued by a younger man.
