TOKYO: The Osaka-Kansai Expo continues to set records as it approaches its final month. TAKASHINA Jun, Deputy Secretary General of the Japan Association for the 2025 World Expo, announced on Wednesday that the Expo saw 1.66 million visitors in the previous week at an average of 237,000 per day.
This set a new weekly high for the second consecutive week, and a new single-day attendance record was set on September 19 when 241,000 visitors passed through the gates. The total number of visitors since opening day reached 23,443,382 on September 20, a number that included 2,916,899 with Expo passes.
On the downside, a spectator was injured by debris during the “EXPO Thanks Fireworks” on September 20. Takashina said safety protocols have been strengthened, including restrictions on fireworks when the wind reaches a certain level and expanded public warnings.
Some of the smaller exhibiting countries will have national days this week, including Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Fiji, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Antigua and Barbuda, Sao Tome and Principe, and Madagascar.
Other events include a biodiversity event looking at Patagonia and Chile’s unique ecosystems. The event highlights the urgent need to preserve natural ecosystems for planetary sustainability and aims to inspire international public-private collaboration for ecosystem protection.
The Craftsmanship Journey features the world of famed Czech artist Alphonse Mucha and is hosted by Sakai City, which is home to one of the world’s largest collections of works by Mucha.
One of the most anticipated events will be demonstration flights– weather permitting – of Joby Aviation’s latest eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, the Joby S4, described by some as a “flying car.”
